海辺の村，発狂した青年，突如姿を現さなくなったよそ者の兵士，同じ日に失踪した少女．村の誰もが知っている出来事だったが，真相を知るものは誰もいない．街からやってきた医師は，発狂した青年を救うためには真実を知る必要があると考え，村人たちの話をかき集める．

Penguin ReadersやOxford BookwormsなどのGraded Readersを多数読んできましたが，この作品は5本の指に入る傑作だと思いました．村人たちの断片的な話を集めるうちに徐々に浮かび上がってくる真実や，同じ人物や出来事に対する見方が人によって大きく異なっていた点など，読んでいて飽きさせません．村人たちが語っている場面では，段落まるごと話している人の一人称の形式になるため，非常に読みやすいです．

語彙レベルは1200．総語数は約13000．SSSの難易度レベルは3.

　簡単な単語しか使っていないながらも、話が面白かったのに感心。物語の骨格がしっかりしてるからでしょう。正直なところ侮っていたのですが（笑）、結構ぐいぐいと引き込まれました。
　話の結末は、予想がつかないでもなかったのですが、描写が淡々としていた分、強烈でした。最後の３ページは、読んでいて気分が悪くなりました・・・想像力をリアルに働かせすぎでしょうか？それとも怖がりすぎ？"A complete hand, white and clean."うひいいいい（恐）
　あまりハイレベルな文章は無理だし、根気も続かないけど何か読みたい、という人にお勧めします。

読みやすい英語でかかれていますので多読初心者におすすめです。
文字も目に優しい印刷で時々挿絵が載っていてよいです
ストーリーも続きが気になるし、わかりやすく描かれています。
英語多読のうちの一冊に向いていますのでこれからはじめる人は要チェックです。
