オグ・マンディーノのこのThe Greatest Salesman in the Worldという著作は、莫大な富を一代で築いた男の寓話です。話の舞台は古代のイスラエルと思われる国で、そこで貧しい家庭に生まれた主人公がどのような教えに従って現在の地位を得たのかということが物語として語られます。

「チーズはどこに消えた？」とおなじように、作者が伝えたいメッセージは、この男の物語に託して語られます。その意味で、Richest Man in Babylonと同じような構成になっています。

英語は前半部は古代の話であるということもありやや専門的な単語も出てきますが、後半部は非常にわかりやすく、読みやすいものとなっています。また、何でもいいから英語でかかれた本を一冊読破してみたいという人にもぴったりな厚さとなっていて、英語の学習にも有益な本だと思います。

朗読者としても超一流です。
バリトンの抑揚のある語り口に導かれ何度も味わったストーリーに
グッと引き込まれてしまいます。

日本語版のように字が大きくはないのです。

日本語版とは本の大きさからして違うんだからそんなの当たり前だろと思う人もいるでしょうが、字が小さいと読むのがいやになって結局は途中でやめてしまうというパターンになる人は注意しましょう。

本書は他にも違う大きさで出版されています。大きいサイズの値段も日本語版のように箆棒に高いというわけではありません。敢えて小さい字で書かれた物を選ばなくてもいいのではないかと思います。

英語の勉強にも良いというような評価をする人がいますが、低レベルの日本人が本書を英語の勉強として活用することはやめた方が良いでしょう。勿論、ある程度の高レベルの英語学習者ならばその限りではありません。

本書は内容を重視して読むべきであって、英語の勉強として読むべきものではありません。
