数年前、帰国子女の高校生に英語を教えてもらっているとき、彼女の大好きだった本として紹介されたEncyclopedia Brownシリーズ。ペーパーバックを読み、分からないところを教えてもらったり、内容について話したりしながらスピーキングの練習をしていました。子供の本ですら、長いものは読むのが辛かった当時でも、これは面白くて苦労しながらも読んでしまいました。

名探偵コナンのような構成で、１話完結（注意深く読めば謎は必ず解ける）の小さな事件が連なっていく物語と巻末の謎解きで、知らないうちに力が着きました。

「百科事典」というあだながつくほど知識豊富なリロイ・ブラウン少年が、探偵として、身近に起こる他愛もない出来事から、重大事件までをも痛快に解決していきます。簡単な英語で書かれているので無理なく読めますし、各章の最後にその事件の解決方法を読者に推理させるコーナーがあるので、思わず時間が経つのを忘れて読み入ってしまいます。実は私は高校で英語の教員をしています。日本での英語教育というと、難しい文法をマスターしたり、小難しい長文を読んだりすることがとかく必要とされているような感がありますが、この本のように、易しめの英語ですが読んでいて楽しいと思えるような本を読むのも大切なことだと思います。英語嫌いの人でもこの本ならとっつきやすいのではないでしょうか。

Amazonによると、Harry Potterも本書も、9歳~12歳が対象となっています。僕は始めHarry Potterを読んでみて、難しい単語が多いのに閉口して投げ出してしまいました。米英の9歳児は難しい本を読むのだなぁと感心したりしました。

本書は、同じ9歳~12歳が対象でも、ずっと易しく読みやすいと思いました。英語の本は、読み進んでいるうちにモヤモヤ霧が掛かったようになって、だんだん分からなくなるような気がするのですが、本書は短編の連作であることと、各編の末尾に謎解きの設問があるので理解の確認ができるがよいと思いました。

僕は本書で、産まれて初めて英語の本を読了できました。続編も買って読むつもりです。
