初めて英英辞典を購入するなら迷わずこれをお勧めします。
私は今まで普通の英英辞典を使っていたのですが、それは基本的にNative English Speakersが使うためのものであり、どうしても解説に難しい単語が出て来て結局英和辞書をひくはめになったり、文化背景を知らないと解りづらい解説に出会うことがありました。
しかしながらこの辞書は、英語を外国語として学ぶ人の為に作られたものであり、発音記号は英米併記、非常に簡潔で平易な単語、英文で書かれています。例文も豊富です。


例として「place」をひくと、

place:<AREA> n.an area,town,building,hotel or shop / This is the place where they are going to build the supermarket.（以下例文多数）

place:<position> n. a position in relation to other things./ This plant needs a warm,sunny place.（以下例文多数）


このような感じで、非常に分かりやすく、英英辞典初心者には絶対オススメです。私は英語塾教師ですが、英会話クラスのテキスト予習にも大変役に立ちますし、高校生で今まで英英辞典に躊躇していた生徒も「この辞書なら使える」と言っていました。

いい辞書だけど，新しい版が出たからそちらをお勧めします。
Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary といって，
CD-ROM　付のを買うように。

このCD-ROMほどIT時代にフィットした英英辞典はない。Webで英語ニュースを読みながら、パソコン画面のはじにこのCD-ROM辞典を起動させ、わからない単語をキーボードでたたけば、一瞬にしてその意味と例文を並べてくれる。辞書をめくっているよりよっぽど早い。特筆すべきは、ほぼすべての単語について、イギリス式とアメリカ式の両方の発音を用意していることだ。これが面白くて、次々と発音ボタンをクリックすることになる。こんなものが２０数年前のわが受験勉強時代にもしあったら！なお、例文から判断して、レベルは大学生からビジネス向けのハイレベルと思うが、高校生でも使えないことはない。世界一流の英英辞典であることは間違いない。
