ダグラス・アダムスの「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」シリーズの全5作品を1冊に収録した本です。3作目までは日本語での翻訳版が出ていましたが、その先は翻訳されていませんのでそれが全部収録された本はありがたいです。あと、ボーナス・ストーリーとして、番外編の短編「Young Zaphod Plays It Safe」も収録されています。かつては、この短編は1986年のクリスマスに英国で発行された「Comic Relief」(ダグラスアダムス他編集)という本で読むことができたのですが、入手が極めて困難でした。でも、この本では1冊でシリーズを完全に全部読むことができます。 1つだけ難点を言うと、本の大きさが大きいので置き場所には困るかもしれません。

何年か前にNHKで放映されたイギリスのSFコメディ『Red Dwarf』にハマった時に同ジャンルのコメディを探した結果購入した一冊です。『The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy』が伝説のSFコメディだということも知りませんでした。1978年にラジオコメディとしてスタートして以来、テレビ版、映画版へと発展し、世界中でマニアファンを育てて一大現象にまでなった作品らしいです。
いささか軽率な買い物でした。800頁強の本をオリジナル版（ラジオ版にしろテレビ版にしろ）への思い入れなしに読み切るのは難行苦行、というのが正直な感想。欝のロボットのマーヴィンなど面白い感じはするのですが、如何せん「小説」として一本立ちした世界ではないので、「テレビ版は面白いんだろうなぁ」ともどかしい気分でいまひとつ乗らないまま進み進むことになります。アイデアそのものの斬新さなどは非常に伝わるので、惜しいところです。『Red Dwarf』の基本設定がこの作品に類似していることも分かりました。
人気テレビ番組のノベライズというのは難しいものですね。しかし日本のこの種のノベライゼーションのレベルよりは遥かに高い印象はあります。それにしても、イギリスの豊かなコメディの伝統というのは何処から来ているのでしょうね？もっとも『Little Britain』などを見るとその豊穣な屈託表現も終焉に向かいつつあるのかな、とは思いますが。
