5.0 out of 5 stars 「武士道」というより「日本人」の紹介です, 2005/3/2
著者、新渡戸稲造が海外に在住していた時、「貴方の宗教は何ですか」と聞かれ、「信じている宗教はない」と答えて「信じられない！貴方は何が正しく、何が間違っているかの判断基準を持たない人間なのか！」と言われてしまいました。
今、特に英語の先生から注意を受けない限り、ほとんどの日本人は、かつての著者と同じように答えるでしょう。私は、「とりあえず『仏教徒』と答えておけ」といわれ、違和感を覚えながら、留学中、それで通しました。
日本人は、明確な形のない倫理観を、知らず知らずのうちに身につけて育ちます。今は大分薄れたと言われますが、義理人情を重視して仲間内のつながりを大切にし、時間に正確で勤勉に働き、名誉と恥を知る。その本質は、今も受け継がれています。
形のない倫理観を、形ある書籍で説明するには大変な労力を必要とするらしく、著者は儒教、仏教を始めとする様々な書籍からその仕組みを解き明かそうとします。しかし、そうした昔の本を読んでない今の日本人にも、程度こそ違え、日本の文化は受け継がれているわけです。

それにしても、著者の英語は難しいです。ネイティブの書いた本を読む方が優しく感じられるほどです。しかし、そうして日本の文化を世界に紹介し、広く読まれた功績は、今さらここで称えるまでもなく、多くの人が認めるところでしょう。
個人的には、日本の倫理観をイメージしてもらうために、有名な武士や大名のエピソードを、的確な英語で生き生きと紹介している部分に、特に惹かれました。

私は新渡戸稲造の魅力と脅威の英語力に魅了しました。言葉の選び方、古い表現を使ってまでも示そうとする日本人らしさ。私自身、此の人を日本人として捉えられないくらい専念された文章だと思いました。しかも、其処には彼の脅威の読書量を反映する自由な表現力が散りばめられています。唯、文体がディケンズぐらいであるという事が一つの難しさと推測します。
彼は完璧な英国人だと推測してしまうほどの文章です。彼の文章は日本人らしさを微塵にも感じない事が時々あります。其れは彼自身が敬虔なキリスト教徒であったからだと思います。彼は日本を客観的に見、其れを西洋の文化と比較し、西洋から分かりやすい日本人像を作り上げた。そうして、日本人で無い日本人は此処に身を現した。
