この著書はアメリカの生活精神の結露として第１級の国民的古典だ。なんでも一から手作りし、自然への熱心な好奇心、探求心による観察はすごい。

森の中のウォールデン湖畔でのほとんどが自給自足の生活。大学を出た男が社会に汚れるのを避け、隠遁する。あるとき町に出ると彼は逮捕される。税金を納めることを拒否していたためであった。それほど自信のある徹底した自足生活。彼のその目的はなんであろう。精神のピューリズムを求めたためであろう。彼の潔癖さは、たとえば新鮮な朝をコーヒーやお茶の香りや味で台無しにしてはならない、と述べているくだりでもわかる。またあまり多くを食べることを戒めている。多く労働することをさえ戒めている。これはあくせく建設に沸き立つ当時のアメリカ国民への批判でもあろうか。切り詰める所は切り詰め、時間を作り、自然の中で遊び、洞察を試みる。それはまさに手作りの洞察である。どこかの学問を当てはめるのではなく、自分自身の目で観察し洞察を（変な言い方だが）築き上げていく。自分の世界を自分の信念で構築していく、このやり方がアメリカを感じさせる。しかし、自然への洞察は自身の観察でするとしても、博大な文学的教養が随所に散りばめられているのは、彼の膨大な読書の証明である。こうしたことが「詩人博学者」と呼ばれる所以だろう。

本書の場合は何度も何度も噛みしめて読み味わうものである。

家を建て井戸を掘り、森の中で家族ともども生活を始めた父が読んでいた本だ。年月を経てもまったく褪せない内容は、ソーローの洞察力の深さを窺わせる。人生において本当に必要なものは何かを考えさせられる。孤独の意味を考えさせられる。自然の中での生活を綴ったものにもかかわらず、社会学的でさえある。鉛筆を持ちながら読んでいると、片っ端から線を引いてしまう。素晴らしい本はいつまでも残る。この先も読み継がれていくことを望んでいる。

大学の卒論でこの本を選び、英文で読んでみました。やはり英文だと難しいですが、日本語の和訳ではないいろんな観点が見えてきますので、日本語で一度読んで気に入った方には是非英文でも読んで欲しい一冊です。ソローのように自然の中で生きる力、現代では失われてしまった大事な何かが見えてきます。
