TVドラマ「SEX AND THE CITY」の原作。TVドラマよりも若干堅いタッチで、所々に捻ったユーモアとインテリジェンスがまぶされています。ですからTVドラマとはまた一味違った形で楽しめるはず。内容としては、ニューヨーカー（あるいはアメリカ人）のモノの考え方、思考の表現方法、あこがれの生き方が端的に分かるという意味で面白い。英語学習教材にもなるのでは。単純な言い回しでも気の利いた言い方があることを気づかせてくれます。

この本は実際の新聞に掲載されていたエッセイ集のようなものなのでひとつひとつが短くどこから読んでもいいという気楽さがある。また口語的なカジュアルな表現がおおく、活きた英語にふれらるのでとてもおもしろかった。内容はもちろんのこと文章の語り口もいきいきとしていておもしろい。

ニューヨークを舞台に、恋に仕事に奮闘する４人のシングル・ウーマンの生活が赤裸々に綴られた超人気ドラマ、Sex and the Cityの原作の和訳です。もちろん、ドラマSex and the Cityと同じ名前の人物が登場しますが、仕事や性格が完全に一致するわけではないため、ドラマのファンになり、?この本(原作)に出会った人は少々戸惑うかも知れません。原作は、ライターのキャリーが書くコラムが中心となって話が展開するのではなく、原作者キャンディスが友人達を集めて語らい、鋭い視点で観察し、書き留めた赤裸々な観察記録と言えるでしょう。内容は、ドラマで取り上げられたエピソードが中心ですが、登場人物が繰り広げるディスカッションは、ドラマ以上に盛り上がりをみせています。キャンディスのコラムを一冊の本にまとめあげた作品ということもあり、各エピソードが小さな章にわかれており、どこから読んでも話題についていけるのも魅力です。通勤電車やコーヒーショップで友達を待つ、ちょっとした時間に読むのにもってこいです。訳者である古屋美登里氏のセンスが光り、日本語でもおしゃれで辛辣な「生」のニューヨークを満喫できる作品に仕上がっています。
