NHKでドラマ化されたのを見て、読んでみようと思ったのがきっかけでしたが、ドラマとは全く違う登場人物の生き生きとした人格描写にまず引き込まれてしまいました。ノエルもキャサリンも、意志が強く行動力があって、不遇にあっても自ら人生を切り開いていくことが出来るような魅力的な女性。1人のプレーボーイ・ラリーとの出会いが二人の運命を変えてゆきます。

2人の女性の生い立ちがつづられる前半は、シリアスなノエルの章と、真剣に生きているのにどこかユーモラスで笑ってしまうキャサリンの章が交互に現れます。ノエルの章を読んで涙ぐんだと思ったら、キャサリンの想像力と現実とのギャップに電車の中であるのを忘れて思わず笑ってしまいました。

そんな無垢であどけない印象の残るキャサリンが飲み込まれてゆく陰謀の罠。くもの巣のように張られたノエルの罠にラリーとキャサリンは飲み込まれてゆきます。ノエルのパトロンでもある、大財閥を率いるデミリスは、ノエルとラリーとの関係を知ってどう2人を遇するのか。最後の1ページまで事件の真相は謎に包まれたままです。

実は英語のペーパーバックを最後まで読みきったのはこの本が初めてでした。本当に最後までスリルを味わいながら読むことが出来る本だったと思います。

同時進行で行われる２人の女性の人生物語、世界中をとびまわる話の展開、ヒロインの生きかた、愛・憎しみ…。読み手の興味をひきつけるものがすべて盛り込まれていて、本を置くことができませんでした。 また、シドニーシェルダン特有の、最後には正義が勝つ（？）展開で、スカッとした気分になりました。

私自信ペーパーバック初心者ですが、英語が比較的簡単なので、読み終えたときには、割と厚い本を英語で楽しんで読めた達成感、話の面白さのため、かなりの満足感が得られました。今は、続編のthe memories of midnightを読みはじめたところです。

勉強目的とはいえ、英語で読書するなら楽しいほうがいいし、それが一番の近道・・・と実感させてくれた本でした。

本の厚さは関係ありません。子供向の本は苦手で、ハリー・ポッター（洋書）も飽きてしまって途中で投げ出したままの私ですが、これは一気に読めました。主人公が女性ですので、大人の女性の方なら特に、感情移入もできるのでは？高校時代英検２級をとって十余年進歩していない私の英語力でも、時間を忘れて楽に読めました。わからない単語もだいたい想像がつきます。（それだけ紋切り型の部分がある・・・ってことかもしれませんが）

続編の「Memories　Of　Midnight」も面白いので、この本を読まれた方は、その勢いで続けて読まれることをオススメいたします。

まだ試験を受けたわけではないので、どの程度進歩したとははっきり言えませんが、シェルダン３冊を読んだ後、TOEIC練習問題を解くスピードがかなり速くなったような気がします。理屈でなく、英語の感覚が少しは研かれた・・・のかもしれません。

外国語学習の目的でその言葉の本の多読をするとき、やっぱり自分の興味や性格に合ったものから読んでいくのも大事なことですね。
