80年作品で、シェルダンとしてはBlood Lineに続くNY Times No1ベストセラー。彼の作品では珍しく？最後のほうちょっと泣けました。最近の作品に比べて、エピソードの「密度」がとても高くて値段はおなじなのでトクした気分です。初版の年次を考えるとシェルダンがこれ書いたのは多分ゴッドファーザー２の公開直後ですね。マフィアの若ボスの「マイケル・モレッティ」はどう考えても、マイケル・コルレオーネにしか思えなかった・・・

前半タルめのところもありますが後半は一気です。彼の作品のなかではおすすめ。

最初読み始めたときは、物語の展開がいまひとつ読みづらかったのですが、
ジェニファーが最初に裁判で勝った後からの物語の展開はほんとに最高にエキサイトしました。
それからはもう、読むことをストップストップすることができず、どんどん弁護士として成功を遂げながらもパーソナルライフでのロマンスの展開の微妙な交わりが、大人の物語だと思います。最終的にはジェニファーは弁護士として成功を収めながも、もっとも悲劇のヒロインを演じたと思います。
本当に物語に潜入できるなら、次のページに行くたびに、悲しすぎて、恐ろしすぎて、そして涙が止まらないはずです。
本当に最高の作品だと思います。しかし、読み終わってから1週間たっても、物語を思い出し、考えると、涙がこみ上げてきます。。。なかなか次の本に手が向けられません。

主人公の女性弁護士ジェニファーが逞しく生きる現代女性として描かれていて共感するところが多く数冊読んだ中でこの本が自分にとってのベストシェルダンとなりました。

前半は幾つかの苦労を味わいながらも弁護士としての階段を着実に上り詰めるキャリアウーマンのサクセスストーリーでしたがアダムとの関係に終止符を打ってからの後半が意外な展開で非常に面白かったです。善と悪という正反対の男性との愛人関係やアダムにも知らせることなく息子を生み育て結局最後には一人で生きる覚悟を決めるところに有能すぎる女性の悲哀を感じました。最後の場面はショックから立ち直れないのに弁護士として法廷に向かうジェニファーの凛とした美しさに心から拍手を送りたいと思いました、本当に泣けてくるストーリ−です。
