シェルダン作品のなかでMaster of the gameの次に面白いのはこれ、と思っています。初版が75年で、50-60sのハリウッドが舞台というと古い古いイメージを抱くかもしれませんが、物語の展開のスピード、意外性は最近の作品と比べてもずばぬけてる。オススメです。

女性のキャラクター描写が秀逸で、逆境から這い上がる女性の強さを感じさせる。これは｢The Master of Game｣にも当てはまる。それに引き換え、男性陣はだらしなさが目立つ。ジョセフィンの不幸も元はといえばデビッドの裏切りによるものである。デビッドには事情があろうとジョセフィンからみれば裏切りに他ならない。自分の側の勝手な事情を言い訳にしてよりを戻そうとすること自体、虫が良すぎる。それでいて相手の側の苦労や受難を想像せずに一方的に相手を責めるのは道理に合わない。それ故に本作の結末はやりきれない。人生が古い映画の筋書き通りに進むものならば、不幸のヒロインは幸福になってほしい。

シドニーシェルダンの小説にはよくありますが、主人公の生い立ちを詳しく描写しており、自分に彼らの気持ちがどんどん入ってきました。ヒロインは結局悪い人だったのかいい人だったのか…友人、家族とともに意見がわかれました。それだけ複雑な気持ちを疑似体験させられる一冊でした。
