　ストーリーは1883年、産業革命が欧州に浸透した頃のスコットランドの一青年から始まり、その子供、孫、ひ孫へと展開していく。
シドニーシャルダンらしい善と悪をはっきり分けられた内容。

　ストーリー展開が早く、世界を叉に掛けながら次から次へと舞台が移動し、事件が起こるので、ドキドキしながら先へ読み進めることができる。
内容が面白く難しい単語もあまり出てこないので、洋書が苦手な人や初心者に読みやすい一冊だと思う。

　ページ数は495と割とあるが、単語や内容はそれほど難しくないのでTOEIC700前後あれば読破できる。

1883年、大いなる野心を胸に秘めたジェミー・マクレガーは、ダイアモンドの宝庫である南アフリカのクリップドリフトに着く。苦労の末ダイアモンドを得たジェミーだが、残酷な裏切りによって死の淵まで追いやられる。不屈の精神で生き続けるジェミーは、やがて復讐を始めるのだった。…

この小説のジャンルを「スリルとサスペンス」という言葉だけでは片づけられません。それこそビジネス、恋、冒険、まるで人生のエッセンスがぎゅっと凝縮されたような、贅沢な小説です。そして何より人間の恐ろしさ、非情さ。時に人間はここまで残酷なのかと思わせられてしまいます。書かれている英語もそんなに難しくないので「原書にチャレンジしてみよう！」と思っている方には、特におすすめしたい作品です。

１つの家系が物語になっているので主人公や時代背景が次々と変わり少しも飽きさせる事がありません。いつもの事ながらシェルダンの面白さに引き込まれてしまいました。登場する人物は権力や富に執着しその為に人の心を踏みにじったり殺人まで犯してしまい結局は自ら墓穴を掘り破滅するシェルダンお得意のパターンです。残忍な登場人物の心情が良く描かれていて本当にゾーッとさせられました。そして最後に生き残ったのは権力も富も手に入るのに拒絶した者というのが何とも皮肉に思われました。人間の幸福とは何かを改めて考えさせられました。
