THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHTを読み終え、登場人物のキャサリンに感情移入していたので、先が気になって、この本も最後まで読むことができました。内容は、大金持ちのデミリスが、最愛の人ノエルとその愛人の男への復讐を終え、今度は、その愛人の妻キャサリンへの復讐を開始するところから始まります。ただこの本では、デミリスがノエル達にした復讐がどんどん周りの人に知られていき、彼がそれにどう対処していくか...というところも読みどころです。洋書に挑戦しようかなぁ..と思っている人は、最後のページまで到達できると思うのでぜひ読んでみてください。

シドニィ・シェルダンの本ではこれを最初に読んだのですが、次々に進んでいく展開と物語の持っていき方にハラハラします。上下巻とも一気に読んでしまいました。

この本の大きな特徴は、主人公一人に視点を絞った一人称の話ではなく、あらゆる登場人物の視点から物語を構成しているということです。そのため、この物語をいろいろな人間の角度から見ることができ、よりストーリーを盛り上げてくれます。あるいは、この話における人間模様を目の当たりにするということになるでしょう。

本当に単純に面白い本です。この本はシェルダンが以前出版した本の続編だそうですが、それを読んでいなくても楽しめました。是非読んでみてください。

この話の前編である“The other side of midnight”は密度の高い、構成もいいミステリーで楽しく読んだのですが、私には結末の後味が悪く感じられました。しかし、この続編でそれはほぼ解消されました。ラストも意外でよかった！本作が納得して読めると思いますので、先に“The other side of midnight”を読むことをオススメします。

この小説の人気のポイントは、前編からの女性主人公の一人、Catherineのキャラクターのおかげなのではと想像しています。彼女は、他のシェルダン小説の女性主人公達に比べて共感しやすい、“普通っぽい”キャラクターです。とびきりの容姿と知性を持った人ですが性格は純朴で、時々ドジだったり、自分で空回りしちゃったり、コメディ・リリーフ的な存在でもあります。安心できる男性を大切に思いつつ物足りなくて、個性の強い強引な男性を愛してしまうところも、なんだか「わかる！」。他の登場人物があきれるほど強烈なので、彼女の存在はホッとさせてくれますし、男性なら守ってあげたくもなるのではないでしょうか。

英語も易しく読みやすいので、フィクションの世界にどっぷりはまってひたすら楽しみましょう！（展開の不自然さとかご都合主義な点は、このさい無視！）。下手なハリウッド映画よりは面白いですよ、きっと。
