　カンザスに住む一介の主婦（といっても大学教授だが）メアリーがルーマニアへの大使に！？

　ためらう彼女の選択肢を絶つように起こった夫の事故死、メアリーを推した大統領の不可解な意図・・・舞台はカンザスから一転、ルーマニアへ。

　外交は虚虚実実。信用してはならない。当時共産主義下のルーマニア内で、徐々にしたたかさを発揮し、知恵を使って外交を成功に導いていくヒロインの成長が心地よいです。したたかさの裏側にある可愛らしさというか。

　ロマンスも芽生える。が、その相手もまた凶弾に倒れる。なぜ？誰が？周りは敵だらけ。忘れ形見の子供たちと自分を守るために一人奮闘する彼女。。そして最後に思いもかけぬ味方が。。

　米・ルーマニア・南米、と様々な国の様々な人物のシーンが交錯する複雑な展開ですが、一気に読んでしまいます。メアリーの魅力と、ミステリー本来の「これからどうなるの？」感が導いてくれます。

　大きな力の前に人間はどう闘えばいいのか？　知恵を使った巧みな戦いが繰り広げられる。次々と訪れる不思議な展開に振り回されながら進んでいくストーリーにあっという間に読み終わってしまいました。サスペンスが好きな人にはお薦め。
