He leaves Lyra in the care of Mrs. Coulter, an enigmatic scholar and explorer who offers to give Lyra the attention her uncle has long refused her. In this multilayered narrative, however, nothing is as it seems. Lyra sets out for the top of the world in search of her kidnapped playmate, Roger, bearing a rare truth-telling instrument, the compass of the title. All around her children are disappearing—victims of so-called "Gobblers"—and being used as subjects in terrible experiments that separate humans from their daemons, creatures that reflect each person's inner being. 舞台は19世紀末。飛行船や気球が飛び、オクスフォードもロンドンも北極圏も出てくるが、ここは、大人も子供もdaemonと呼ばれる動物の形をとったスピリットと共に生活しているパラレル・ワールドだ。

オクスフォードに預けられている11歳の孤児ライラは、使用人の子どもたちと共に走り回りジプシーの子どもたちと「戦争」をするお転婆少女。子どもの誘拐事件が頻発し、ライラの遊び仲間も姿を消す。

美しい女性探検家の助手として引き取られてから、ダストと呼ばれる謎の物質を巡る陰謀に巻き込まれていき、誘拐された子どもたちを助けるために極北の地まで旅立つ。 パラレル・ワールドというSF的な設定だが、現実世界に相似した舞台設定の中、丁寧に描写をしているので、違和感なく物語の世界に引き込まれる。

ライラは何度も絶体絶命の危機に立つのだが、daemonのPantalimonと共に自力で切り抜けていく。 daemonは共に生き、共に死ぬ大切なパートナーだ。子どもの頃はさまざまな動物の形を取り、大人になると形を固定する。通常、一定の距離から離れることはできない。他人のdaemonは見えるが触ることは許されていない。読み進む内に、その緊密な関係が羨ましくなってくる。

ハリー・ポッターも大好きだが、ハリー・ポッターが大人の枠組みの中で友人たちの協力を得ながら進んでいる一種の学園ストーリーであるのに比べ、はるかに枠組みが大胆にしてダイナミックだ。

シリーズ三部作の第1巻。イギリスの作品だが英語の単語や表現は平易。新潮社から邦訳「黄金の羅針盤」が出ている。

　"The Golden Compass"が映画化されると聞き、一念発起して原書で読むことにしました。現在、シリーズ３部作の第２巻を読んでいる段階なので、１巻単体で評価します。"The Golden Compass"の特徴は、テンポのいい展開、無駄のない描写、読み易い英語、洗練された文体です。読んでいて一瞬たりとも退屈しませんし、苛々することもありません。更に注目すべき点は、世界観や人物像に見る高いオリジナリティです。やんちゃで嘘つきな主人公の少女ライラは、世界を救うという重大な使命を背負い、次々と迫り来る危機に立ち向かいます。ライラは、剣や魔法を使いこなす典型的な「勇者」ではありません。彼女の武器は、知恵と勇気と真実を告げるアイテム'alethiometer'のみ。そんな斬新なヒロインである彼女が道を切り開く様子には、目を奪われること間違いなしです。今後の彼女の成長が楽しみです。ライラを取り巻く大人達の描写も善悪二元論では割り切れず、人間臭くて面白みがあります。世界観についてですが、ＳＦ的要素とファンタジー的要素を無理なく融合させ、尚且つ宗教的テーマをふんだんに盛り込んでいます。例えば科学と（キリスト教的な）教義の衝突、教義に対する反発、原罪、原罪からの解放を求めること、などです。（ファンタジーで私の関心事であるテーマに触れられるとは、思っていませんでした）。この壮大な独自の世界観は、完成度が高いと思います。作者の豊かな想像力に、脱帽せずにいられません。…作品の雰囲気は、あくまで重々しくダークで高尚、安っぽさは微塵もありません。　"The Golden Compass"は、RPG的感覚で読める作品を求める人には、不向きかもしれません。でも今までに無い感覚のファンタジー、高尚なファンタジーを求める人は、是非読んでみてください。この作品は私の期待を大きく上回るので、迷わず星五つをつけます。

イギリス児童文学の代表的な賞，カーネギー賞を取っただけでなく，シリーズ最終作『琥珀の望遠鏡』は権威あるウィトブレッド賞のBook of the Yearを児童文学として初めて取った画期的な作品。ということで分かるように，よくも悪くも本格的。『ハリーポッター』は学園物としても読める，『指輪物語』は歴史物としても読める。でもこのシリーズは純然たるファンタジーです。パラレルワールドという考え方，独自の世界観についていけないと厳しいです。「神とは人を抑圧してきたものではないか」という西洋的なテーマがどーんと貫かれています。この辺も日本人にはしんどいかも。物語は確かに面白い（第２作『神秘の短剣』は特にお勧め）です。頑固で嘘つきのヒロイン，ライラがだんだん頼もしくかっこよく見えてきます。精巧に作られたディープなファンタジー。ハリー・ポッターのファンよりアラン・ガーナーのファンにお勧めします。
