　日本語訳が出たばかりのころたまたま表紙に惹かれて読んだ。もう１０年以上前になるが、読後の衝撃は今でも鮮明に覚えている。今回、その表紙に再会して、迷わず原文にチャレンジしてしまった。

ジュブナイルだから、使われている単語や文章自体はそれほど難しくない。高校程度の英語力で十分読めると思う。しかし、物語を通して著者が問いかけていることの重みは、大人になった今でも変わらない。いや、このコミュニティを成立させる理屈もなんとなくわかってしまうようになった（かといって肯定するわけではないけれども）今は、もっともっと重いかもしれない。その理屈に対抗するため、ギバーとジョナスがとった方法に、今回なぜか涙が止まらなかった。

　今回英語で再読しながら自分でも翻訳してみたが、シンプルな単語ほど難しい・・・。日本語版の言葉がいかに素晴らしかったか改めて気付いた。絶版になってしまったと聞いた気もするが、各地の図書館等にはまだ置いてあると思うので、興味のある方はそちらも見てみてください。

5.0 out of 5 stars けっこう衝撃的な本でした, 2004/8/3
天候を含め、全てがコントロールされた世界には、
痛みも苦しみも深い悲しみもない。
一見理想的に思えるこの世界には、だがしかし心からの喜びも幸せも存在しない。
過去の記憶を受け継ぐものとして選ばれた主人公ジョナスは、
そこに何にもかえがたい「愛」が欠如していることに気付いてしまう。

この本を読んでいる時、手にちょっとした怪我をしました。
痛い！！と、思いつつ、この痛みがなくて愛のない世界にいるよりはいいな。
なんて、不思議と幸せになってしまいました。
理想通りにはならず、不完全なこの世界。
それを前向きに受け入れていく勇気をくれる本です。
英語も読みやすいですし、ぜひたくさんの人に読んでいただきたいです。

英語の授業を通して、この本と出逢いました。シャイクスピアやジョージ・オーウェルのようなクラシックとは違い、とても解り易い英語で読みやすく、本自体も薄めなので、初めて洋書にチャレンジされる方にもお勧めです。それだけでなく、内容も深く、とても考えされられるものです。どんどん読み進めている内に、自分がジョナス（主人公）になってしまったような、そんな感覚に陥ってしまいました。
