イタリアの王女セレナはムッソリーニ派に両親を殺され、裏切った叔父に財産を横取りされてしまう。失意の内にローマを去り、アメリカに逃げたセレナは、４年後叔父への復讐心を胸に抱いて故郷のローマに帰って来た。・・・

過酷な運命を背負ったセレナの数奇な人生が、ダニエル・スティールらしい切り口でロマンティックに描かれています。物語の舞台がローマ、パリ、ニューヨーク、サンフランシスコ、ギリシャ、ロンドンなどめまぐるしく変わっていって、まるで世界中をセレナと共に飛び回っているかのような気分にさせられます。最初は文字通りの箱入り娘で恋人にすがることしかできなかったセレナが、持ち前の聡明さと自立心とチャレンジ精神で戦後の混沌とした時代を乗り切っていく姿に、感動を覚えました。
姑との確執や出産の場面など、ただのロマンティック小説ではなくて、女性の激しい生き様がリアルに描かれているのも、魅力の１つです。

第2次世界大戦に、家族と祖国を失った美少女セレナ。終戦と共に彼女は、祖国イタリアに戻って来た。天涯孤独で頼る人が誰もいない中、自分１人で生き抜かなければならない。生きるためのセレナの戦いが、今始まる。・・・
イタリアの王女の称号を持つ主人公、セレナの波瀾万丈の人生を描いた壮大なドラマです。

とにかくロマンティックで、あまりにドラマティックで、もう女性の憧れの要素をふんだんに取り入れた作品です。主人公セレナの類い稀なる美しさ、イタリア王女という称号、そしてヒロインを暖かく見守ってくれるハンサムな男性・・・。最初はただ泣いて恋人や乳母に甘えることしかできなかった少女が、強い１人前の女性に変わって行く姿には、憧れさえ感じます。王女という設定にはびっくりしたが、いつも堂々と運命に立ち向かうセレナの姿はまさに王女！設定が女性として自立するのが大変だったと推定される時代なので、セレナの生き方には「カッコいいなあ」と感嘆せずにはいられません。

ジェットコースターのようにめまぐるしく変わっていくセレナの運命に、読んでいるこっちも「どうなるの、どうなるの」と急かして読んでしまいます。この作品がハッピーエンドかはわからないけれど、せいいっぱい人を愛することの素晴らしさを、この作品は教えてくれます。
