１９６０年代のアメリカが舞台。ケネディの暗殺，ベトナム戦争，キング牧師の暗殺といった時代背景とともに歩んだヒロインの半生記。

不遇な環境に育ち，母親と価値観を異にするヒロインは，自分自身の足で，人生を切り開いて行きます。逆境や周囲の不幸にもくじけない強いヒロインですが，心の中に空虚を実感するようになり，そして…

平易な英語であり，読み手は飽きることなく，少しいい気分にもなれるという，この著者の小説に共通する美点を備えていると思います。

当時の大学のキャンパスの雰囲気もよく書き込まれていて，時代背景に興味がある方にも推薦できる小説です。

Tanaという一人の女性が、傷ついたり悩んだりしながらも生きる道を探し、切り開き、手に入れて行く。彼女は、努力して地位や名声も手に入れていくが、果たしてそれで幸せなのかと考える。そして・・
最後に『本当に自分が心から望んでいた幸せ』を手に入れる。
小説だもんね・・実際そんなうまくいくわけないよ。と思いながらも、健気で時に愚かしくも心優しいTanaを思わず応援してしまう。
英語的にも簡単なので、リラックスして娯楽で読むにはよいかも。
