 『Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire』（邦題『ハリー・ポッターと炎のゴブレット』）でローリングは危険と歓喜を表裏一体に描きだしている。次々に登場するドラゴンや屋敷しもべ妖精たち、命をかけた挑戦の数々。いまや14歳となった孤児の主人公がマグルの親戚を離れてホグワーツ魔法魔術学校に戻れる日まで、残すところ2週間となっていた。そんなある晩、ハリーは不吉な夢を見て、稲妻形の傷が激しく痛みだす。彼は不安になり、人目を忍んで生きている自分の名づけ親、シリウス・ブラックに連絡を取る。幸い、今シーズン初のスポーツイベント、クィディッチ・ワールドカップを観戦できる喜びで、ハリーはヴォルデモード卿とその邪悪な手下、デス・イーターたちが殺しをたくらんでいることをしばらく忘れることができた。

   さあ、巨大な透明マントを投げかけて、物語のもっと先をのぞいてみよう。すると見えてくるのはただ、「あの人」がハリーを狙って動き始めたこと、そして今年は、グリフィンドール、レイブンクロー、ハッフルバフ、スリザリンの間でクィディッチ・マッチが行われないということだけ。だがその代わりに、ホグワーツ校とほかの2つの魔術学校── おしゃれなボーバトンズ校と冷淡なダームストラング校── とで、3魔法使いトーナメントが開催されるという。各学校の代表に選ばれた者が3つの究極の試練に立ち向かうことになっている。はたしてハリーは幸運な挑戦者となることができるのか？

   しかしクィディッチ・ファンの読者もがっかりすることはない。今回はこの最高のゲームをワールドカップのシーンで楽しむことができる。マグルに変装した10万人の魔女や魔法使いが「じゅうぶんにさびれた荒野」に集合する。ローリングはいつもと変わらぬ魔法の手さばきで細部を描き、生き生きとしたコミカルな世界をつくりあげている。突拍子もないのはたとえば観客のテント。生きたクジャクをつないだ小宮殿もあれば、塔をいくつも備えた3階建てもある。売られているスポーツグッズもすごい。「選手の名をキーキー叫ぶバラ飾り」や「本当に飛ぶファイヤーボルト（高価な最速のほうき）の小型モデル」、「得意げに手のひらの上を歩き回る、集めて楽しい有名選手の人形」などなど。

   もちろん、両チームもそれぞれに強烈な個性がある。たとえば各チームのマスコット。ブルガリアチームのマスコットは、だれもかれもを魅了して一瞬のうちに自分たちの味方に引き入れる美しいヴィーラ。アイルランドチームの応援者までがたちまちヴィーラに夢中になる。しかしアイルランドも負けてはいない。大勢の小さな応援団が自ら打ち上げ花火となって舞い上がる。「レプラコーンたちは再度空中に飛び出すと、今度は巨大な手となって、フィールドの向こうのヴィーラに宣戦布告のサインを送った」

   シリーズ4作目が出版されるずっと前から、ローリングはこの作品がこれまでになく暗いストーリーだと予告していた。たしかにこの作品は、読者を笑わせた次の瞬間にはかならずハリーの命を脅かし、読者を不安にさせている。物語の奥深くには危険とともにさまざまな感情が潜んでいるのだ。とはいえ、ローリングは新しい愉快なキャラクターも登場させている。たとえば、闇の魔法使いの追手、アラスター・“マッドアイ”・ムーディ。彼は年をとって妄想症になったとかならないとか。それからネタを探してホグワーツ校をゴキブリのように忙しく動きまわるリタ・スキーター（この日刊予言新聞のスクープ探し屋が愛用する「コメント速書きペン」は、純粋そのもののコメントも、脚色のひどいゴシップ記事に変えてしまう）。

   強烈な印象の残るエンディングで、ローリングはいくつかのプロットを未解決のまま残し、5作目につなげている。これを読むと、ひょっとすると著者自身にもヴィーラの血が流れているのでは、という気がしてくる。彼女のペンは、彼女の世界を完璧にする魔法の杖なのかもしれない。 --This text refers to the ハードカバー edition.

　この第4作はシリーズ中の分岐点というべきものだ。今までで1番ダークな雰囲気が漂い、終わり方から判断するにさらにこの雰囲気はこの後続くようだ。この4作目を読んでみて、私はハリー・ポッターの魅力が何なのか1番強く感じた。ハリーの魔法世界は、私達が生きている世界をそのまま新しい視点から見ているものなのだ。偏見や差別と戦うこと、本当の友情を築く難しさ、誠実さが報われない哀しさ、あまりに強すぎる悪に対する絶望感、真実を理解してもらえない怒り、その中で必死に戦い続けること、そして死を越えて働き続ける愛の力など、この作品に描かれている感情はものすごくリアルで、登場人物達が感じているものを全く自分自身のことのように感じさせる力がある。この物語のどこが児童文学なのか分からない。描かれている感情は人が人生において抱く色々な種類の感情なのに。（特に今回はハリーと共に、どうしようもない怒りを1番多く感じた）これまでの3作のように、推理小説のようなプロットと生き生きとしたストーリーテリングが見事なマッチしている。退屈なページが一つもない。「今日は1日ハリー・ポッター・デーにする」くらい、落ちついて集中して読むにふさわしい本だと思う。（この版はイギリス版です）

７３４ページという、本の重さも恐ろしいもんですが、内容も負けず劣らず重いです。２巻でも相当いじめられたハリー君ですが、今巻の結末は本当に彼にとってツライものだったろうと・・・、いまだに思い出すだけで涙が。。。

が、相変わらず彼の周りには優しく、たのもしい味方がたくさんいて、中でもいつもホントーの母のように優しいミセス・ウィーズリーは私の大のお気に入りです。今回とりあえず全ての問題がかたづいた後、苦しい胸の内を吐露したハリー君を黙ってそっと抱きしめるウィーズリー夫人。はじめてこんな風に、まるで母のように抱きしめられ顔をゆがめるハリー君。このシーン、何度読み返しても嗚咽をもらさんばかりに泣いてしまうのは私だけでしょうか。。。？？
また、前から気になっていた女の子に、ハリー君は本格的に恋心を抱き始めます。最初は迷いながらも、意を決してパーティーのパートナーに誘うところは、純粋でかわいらしく、まったく顔のニヤケが止まらずに大変でした。。。

さらに、今巻は推理小説としても楽しめる要素が多く含まれています。毎回予想外の結末をむかえるこのシリーズですが、誰がヴォルデモートの隠れた手下なのか、一見無駄とも思える描写にも、犯人を指し示す手がかりが隠されています。残念ながら私の予想は外れてしまいましたが、これから読まれる方ぜひ犯人捜しにチャレンジしてみてはいかがでしょうか？

絵本以外の洋書を最後まで読んだのはこれが初めてで、このすごい長さに最後まで読めるかとても不安な思いでしたが、読み進むうちにどんどん話の中に引き込まれていき、最初の不安は無用のものだったと知りました。
そして今は、早く５巻を読みたい気持ちでいっぱいです。

驚きでした。英語は苦手なのに日本語版より楽しめました。原書で読んだのは初めてでしたが今までの巻で一番夢中になりました。後で読んだ日本語版に退屈さを感じてしまったほどです。始めのおっくうさを根性と物語の面白さで乗り越えるともう止まりませんでした。面白い言葉遊び、訛り具合、それに物語の雰囲気、日本語では伝えきれない魅力がいっぱいでした。不思議と言葉の壁は感じず、物語の世界が豊かに広がっていました。日本語版ほど字体を色々に変えていないのもよかったです。自然にイメージがわき、むしろ良く伝わってきました。英語力効果もありました。辞書を引き引きたどたどしく読んでいたのですが、英文を読むスピードが断然速くなりましたし英文への抵抗感もかなり無くなって自然にすっと読めるようになりました。読むのが遅いので、なかなか終わらないのも魅力でしたね。ハリーファンの方には特にオススメです。生のハリーの世界は、本当に魅力的でした。

（★★★★☆なのは、ストーリーに少し疑問を感じてしまったからです。今回のダンブルドア先生には少し不満でした。もしかして訳があったのでしょうか・・・）
