　超有名なトリック（？）らしいが，ミステリ初心者の私は，「アンフェア論争を起こした有名な作品」という以外の予備知識なく読み始めた。アンフェアというからには，犯人探しのために必要な伏線や手掛かりが与えられていないなど，ミステリとして欠陥があるのだろうと思いながらも，有名だからとりあえず……と読み進めた。
　すると……意外な人が真犯人だったので，心底驚いた。私は，アンフェアという意味を誤解していたらしい。読み返すと，伏線や手掛かりは山ほどあったのに……スレたミステリ好きならともかく，普通の人には絶対に真犯人を読み取ることができないのではないか？
　本作のトリックを知らない方は，今すぐ読んで欲しい。必ず，「えー！　そうだったのか！」という，心の底からのショックを味わうことができるはずである。英文も比較的簡単で読みやすかった（麻雀の知識がない人には，麻雀シーンが分からないかもしれないが，ここは読み飛ばしても可）。

夫を毒殺したと噂されていたファラーズ夫人が、睡眠薬の過剰摂取で死んだ。その翌日、ファラーズ夫人と親密な関係にあったキングズ・アボット村の名士ロジャー・アクロイドが書斎で刺殺された。そしてその書斎から、アクロイドに宛てて書かれたファラーズ夫人からの手紙が消えていた。謎が謎を呼ぶ事件の解明に、かぼちゃ作りに飽き飽きしていたポアロが呼ばれることに。・・・

とにかく衝撃の真相に、心臓が止まるほど驚きました！ポワロが終幕でいつものごとく、今回の事件の種明かしをするのですが、私の中で「まさか、まさか」という気持ちがじわじわ広がっていきました。案の定クリスティにまんまと騙されてしまいました。この作品は、「このトリックはフェアか」ということで大論争を巻き起こしたことでも有名ですが、この作品でコロッと騙されなかった方は、実にもったいない！ポワロの少しずつの解明によって犯人がじわじわとわかってくる、ぞくぞくするような気持ちが味わえるのも、この作品の醍醐味だと思います。
