　シリーズが始まって以来、スペンサーが凶弾に倒れたのはこれで2回目である。重症を負ったスペンサーは、スーザン、ホークとともに西部の荒野で傷を癒す。シルベスター・スタローン主演の映画「ロッキー４」などにもみられるが、手付かずの自然の中で自身の限界に挑み、困難を克服するという行為は、アメリカ人にとっては特別な意味を持つに違いない。作者は失われたフロンティア・スピリッツを、よりわかりやすい象徴的な形でスペンサーに体現させたかったのではないだろうか。トレーニングに精を出し、料理と詩を愛し、精神医学に精通しているなど、探偵としては実にユニークなキャラクターのスペンサーであるが、本質的には伝統的なアメリカン・ヒーローの系譜に位置する人物であることが、本作ではより鮮明になっている。現代を代表するアメリカン・ヒーローといっても過言ではあるまい。ハードボイルド小説の研究で博士号を取った作者であればこその、確信犯的なプロットである。

　灰色の男はある意味スペンサーやホークと同じ種類の人間であり、シリーズ中最強の敵でもある。敵が強ければ強いほどスペンサーとしてはあのような対処をせざるを得なかったのかもしれない。全身灰色づくめという点は、レイモンド・チャンドラー作「大いなる眠り」に登場するエディ・マースを髣髴とさせる。そういえば「ユダの山羊」でもスターンウッド将軍がモデルと思われる車椅子の依頼人が登場していた。たった一つの事件で、作者お得意の家族の問題に人種や貧富の格差の問題を重層的に盛り込み、現代アメリカ社会の抱える病理をわかりやすく描いてみせる手腕はさすがである。

話の最初はいまいち面白みを感じませんでしたが，徐々に盛り上がる展開．話の真ん中くらいで最後の結末はかなり見えてきて，もう終わっちゃうんじゃないのと思ったところでスペンサーが撃たれ瀕死の状態に．ここからの展開がいかにもスペンサーで見もの．郊外に買ったコンコードの家を手放さざるを得なくなったのはシリーズを通して読んでいる者としては残念．恋人のスーザンが養子を欲しがるという小話も面白いし，元検事のリタ・フィオーレとの再会も楽しめる．
