ボストンの良家の夫人が通り魔に襲われ、犯人探しは闇の中に。そこでスペンサーの出番となります。被害者の夫人の過去が明らかになるにつれ、入り乱れる人生劇は印象深いです。スペンサーとスーザンの粋なやりとりは原文で魅力的だと思います。

ｽﾍﾟﾝｻｰは我々を裏切る事はない。本作でも彼の活躍に僕らの心は揺さぶられる。本作では殺人犯を探し出すことを中心にすえていない。つまり、ﾐｽﾃﾘの楽しみの一つが削られているのである。しかしながら物語として一流なのはまさに作者の力量である。一人称で描かれる「探偵小説」の楽しさ、娯楽性を再確認させてくれた本作であった。

ある名家の女主人が殺害された背景を調査するスペンサー．その家族，警察当局，さらには上院議員まで絡んで話が展開する．話の本筋もなかなか読ませるが，スペンサーと友人の関係がより前面に出ているのも面白い．ホークの登場は定番として，不法に留置所へ入れられるとボストンの刑事クワークが飛んできて助けたり，ゲイの刑事リー・ファレルと新たな友情を結んだり，ギャングの一家の執事（？）だったヴィニイ・モリスがスーザンを警護するために一瞬登場したり．．．リーのパートナーがエイズで死んだ時のスペンサーがいかにもスペンサーらしい．

前作で同居を試みて諦めたスーザンとスペンサーは，相変わらずふふっと笑わせてくれる会話をあちこちで披露．この2人の会話は毎度楽しませてくれるがこの本では大笑いさせてくれた箇所がいくつかあった．
