あの傑作「初秋」でめぐり合ったポールと，今ではほとんど父親のような役回りのスペンサー．「告別」で仕事の依頼を持ち込み，他にもこれまでちょくちょく登場してきたが，今回はポールの母親が失踪するという問題に関わることに．単なる母親探しではなく，自分自身の精神的問題（葛藤）を解決し，母親の（より大きな）精神的問題をもなんとか解決しようとするポール．そしてそれを渋く手助けするスペンサー．スペンサーとポールの関係がギャングのブロズ親子と対比されていたり，スペンサーとスーザンの関係を身近に見てポールが自分のフィアンセとの関係に疑問を抱くなど，伏線がいろいろあって面白い．またスペンサーが犬を飼い始めるというのは傑作．
