本書の著者オストウォルドはカリフォルニア大学サンフランシスコ校医学部教授を務め、パフォーミング・アーティストの精神治療に携わった精神医学者。長年にわたってグールドと交友があり、アマチュアのバイオリニストとして彼と共演した経験ももっている。科学者らしい態度で書かれた本書は、資料を広く渉猟し、数多くのインタビュー（グールドを診察した医者を含む）で第一次情報を豊富に集め、情緒を排した筆致でグールドの人間性に迫る。
また、グールドの音楽性についても本格的な分析を行っている。しかし、本書中もっとも生き生きとした瞬間は、やはり2人の交友に関する部分だ。中でも、1957年の2月に著者が初めてグールドの演奏会を聴きに行き、楽屋を訪ねて意気投合し、そのままグールドを自分の車に乗せて友人の家に連れていったくだり。グールドと著者、そして著者の友人たちは朝が迫るまでセッションを楽しむのだ。なお、著者が新事実として告げているところによると、グールドの姓は10歳手前ぐらいまで「ゴールド」だったという。（松本泰樹） --This text refers to the 単行本 edition.

最近グールドのCDを大量に聴く機会があり、
興味を持って手に取りました。

著者の精神分析的視点が色濃く出ているため、
クラシック音楽の素養のない私でも、それほど引っ掛からず
読むことが出来ました。
天才グールドについての資料を広く集め、
精神分析医・伝記作家として正確な叙述をすすめています。

変人としても名高いグールドの迷惑っぷりも、リアルです。
そんな心身症の分析を行いつつも、冷たい感じがしないのは、
プロローグにもあるように、彼を懐かしむ気持ちが強いためでしょうか。

この本を読んで晩年の『ゴルドベルグ変奏曲』を聴いたら、
不覚にも泣きそうになってしまいました。
かなりグールドに感情移入できる本です。

グ-ルドといえば、演奏会をリタイアし、専ら室内での放送・録音活動に従事し、同時に数々の奇行がクロ-ズアップされる芸術家であるが、この本では従来語られてきた、音楽的側面からだけではなく、精神科医である著者（ヴァイオリンもたしなむ）が、彼の精神状態を医学的見解に基づき、分析している点が斬新で、今までにないグ-ルド伝

と思った。是非、一読をおすすめしたい。

人が何かに没頭したとき、もっと大事な何かを忘れ、それを思い出したとき、もっと大きな「何か」を忘れる。グールドの「それ」は、まるで雪が降ることのようだ。
