ロンドンの貧民層からのし上がり伝説的な賭博場のオーナーとなったヒーローと、田舎育ちのお嬢さんで好奇心いっぱいの作家でもあるヒロインのラブストーリー。前作「Then Came You」で登場しとっても印象的だったDerek Cravenが今回のヒーローになってます。下水管に捨てられそこからあらゆることをやって生き抜いてきた彼は、愛や優しさなどは弱さと考えて心の奥深くに封じ込め、ただ富みだけが全てと考えて生きてきましたが、ヒロインのまっすぐで深い愛情に根底から揺さぶられることになります。Derekは彼女に心を開くことができるのか？
この作品たくさんの登場人物がでてきますが、どのキャラもよく描かれており、いろいろな事件がおこってとてもわくわくして読めました。でもやっぱり印象的なのは２人の場面！雪が舞うロンドンの舗道での別れ、舞踏会の夜雪に覆われた中庭での情熱的な抱擁、襲われそうになっておびえて震えるヒロインをひざに乗せてやさしく慰めるシーン、どれをとっても忘れられません！シニカルだったDerekが、結婚してからどんどん愛情豊かなだんなさまになっていくところもよかったなぁ。何度も読み直してしまうほどおススメの作品です。

カジノや買収宿を営む暗い過去をもつデレック。その彼の店を基に小説を書きたいサラは、偶然デレックが二人の男に襲われているのを、持っていた銃で救う。それをきっかけに彼の店に調査のため通うようになる。店の従業員はみな彼女に優しいが、デレックだけは彼女に冷たい。しかし本当は、デレックはサラに惹かれているが、彼自身の過去を考えると彼は彼女に相応しくないと思っている。田舎に婚約者もいるが、サラはデレックに惹かれていく自分をどうすることも出来ない。彼の思いに気づいたサラは彼に彼女の思いを告げる。不器用な二人が相手を思いやるあまりすれ違うところが切ない。サスペンスもロマンスもあり、退屈しない。難しくなく気軽に読める本。

「冬空に舞う堕天使と」から興味をもって、探し当てて読んだ本書。
ヒーローがいい！　ヒロインは自分にはもったいなさ過ぎると一度はヒロインを突き放し、諦めようとするヒーローと、そんなヒーローに対する気持ちを衒いなく表し、せまっていくヒロイン。それにしても、ヒロインを諦めたときのヒーローの悶絶振りが．．ふふふ。
ヒーローの暗い過去を理解し、ヒーローが心を開いていくことをじっと待つヒロインが、素直に素敵だと思えます。
「冬空〜」と甲乙付けがたい作品です。そういえば、エヴィのパパが結構顔を出してきますね。
それにしても、Derekが思いのほか若かったようです。前作Then Came You　ではもう少し年齢が高いかと思ったんですが．．．。
