　高い壁の前にぽつんと立つ男と壁に映る影。この不思議な表紙と『ハドリアヌスの長城』に惹かれて読んだ本である。主人公の名前“ヘイドリアン”とは、ラテン語ではハドリアヌス。ローマ帝国の最大版図を築いた皇帝の名である。そんな高貴な名前を付けられた主人公は、人生の大半を刑務所や逃亡生活という形で過ごしてきた。その彼が友人ソニーから特赦を与えられて、町に戻ってくるところから話は始まる。
　読み終わって感じたのは綿密だな、ということ。良く言えば、作品に奥深さがあるということ。時には、混乱するほど現在と過去が交錯し、次第に謎が明らかになってくる。また、各登場人物それぞれの過去が詳細に描かれているから、登場人物に深み出てくる。しかし、裏を返せばわかりにくいということで、気に入らないと思う読者もいるかもしれない。
　内容は非常にシリアス。特赦を与えられて自由なはずのヘイドリアンだが、表紙画のように自分の影に囚われている。文章の中に何度も出てくる「たとえ自分が刑務所の中にいても、塀の外にいるソニーと立場を変わりたいとは思わなかった」という主人公ヘイドリアンの言葉は、自由の度合いはもちろん違うが、仕事や家庭、義務や責任に囚われている私たち一般人も、本質的には変わらない、ということを表しているのかもしれない。

お話の前半はペースがゆっくりしていて、どう転がるのかわからなかった。半ばから後半にかけてぐっと盛り上がるので、しんぼう強く読みすすめることをおすすめする。それにしてもアメリカは変な国だ。小説の舞台は片田舎で、町中みんな知り合いで親族も多く親子２代に渡るつきあいやら反目がある。そういう場所はどこの国にもあるが、この町の主な産業は刑務所なのだ。刑務所の運営で金が流れ汚職も存在する。引退した看守がバーを経営し、そこへ現役の看守や元囚人が酒を飲みにくる。釈放された囚人が今度は別の刑務所の運営に乗り出す。主人公はそんななかで運命に翻弄されまくっているが、最後には自分自身を取り戻す。まじめな小説だ。
