内容説明

The son of a famous pianist, music student Shinichi Chiaki dreams of studying abroad and becoming a conductor like his mentor. Unfortunately, his fear of flying grounds his lofty plans! As he watches other classmates achieve what he has always wanted, Shinichi wonders if he should quit music altogether.

Then one day he meets fellow student Megumi Noda, also known as Nodame. This oddball girl cannot cook, clean, or even read a music score, but she can play the piano in incomparable Cantabile style. And she teaches Chiaki something that he has forgotten: to enjoy his music, no matter where he is.

のだめカンタービレの英語訳バージョンです。
絶対に面白いから、と、日本の友人に勧められて、購入しました。
（北米に住んでいると、日本のコミックは手に入りにくいので、英語版第１巻を最初購入）
そして、その１冊が、とても面白くて、日本語の原作を１６巻を空輸したんですが。。。

日本語原作を、台詞を覚えるほど、何度も読んだ後、
改めて英語バージョンを読み直してみて、がっかり。
かなり誤訳があるんです。
コミック本来の面白さは、ちゃんと伝えてくれてはいたけど、
随分、違っちゃっています。

例えば、
「誰がどうした」の「誰が」が違っていることがとても多い。
また「誰の何がどうした」の「誰の」も違っているものが多い。
巻末の日本の文化紹介も、良く出来ている部分もある一方、
全くデタラメな紹介になっているものもありまず。

日本語を第一言語とするちょっと英語の出来る人が、
校正の段階でナナメ読みして、確認するだけで、
こうした誤りは直せるはずなのに。。。

８〜９割はちゃんと訳せているし、
自然な英語（だと、思う。私に英語を評価するだけの能力はありません。）となっているし、
十分面白いし、
文字数の制限のある中、
翻訳者は、良くやったと思いますが、
原作の日本語の意味の確認を怠った編集者には、もうひと頑張りして欲しいと思いました。

この本に対する、コミックの訳本としての評価は、私の中では低いのですが、
英語学習者が、英会話につかうような英語表現を覚えたかったら、
この本、悪くないかも。と、いうわけで、星４つです。

誤訳にさえ気をつければ、（たぶん）英語表現は自然だし、
もし、このコミックにある英語を全部すらすらと云えるようになったら、
日常の英会話で困ることはなさそうです。

「のだめ」の英語版です。
翻訳されたコミックによくあるように、日本語版と左右反転していたらどうしよう、「びよらは右、弓は左」になっていたらどうしよう、と心配していましたが、杞憂でした。日本語版と同じ本の開きです。

さすがにのだめ語は訳出しきれてませんが、英語でも十分腹を抱えて笑えました。あ、それは日本語版のセリフを覚えているからか(^^;、と思って「のだめ」を知らない知人に読ませたところ、真剣に笑っていたので、英語版でも十分楽しめる内容だと思います。

いくつか誤訳はありますが、全体的にしっかりとした丁寧な翻訳です。のだめのセリフはもっとルーズでもよかったかな。

英語版でも面白いことが証明されたので☆５つ。

のだめファンとしては、英語圏の方々に受け入れてもらえることを祈るばかりです。全体としては英語としても読みやすいと思いました。
誤訳としては「ハリセン（張り扇）」がpuffer-fish(ハリセンボン、針千本：フグの仲間の魚）になっているのが痛い。HARISENと音訳して、江藤先生の柄物として別途説明しとかないと8巻あたりでハマるはずなのに、訳者は全巻は読んでないのではないかと。
