ぜひ一度お読みになることをお勧めします。
読後は、手を合わせて祈りたい気分でした。
全てのエピソードが、たとえ細かなものであっても、後で意味を持ってきます。
今自分は物語に入っている！という感覚を強く持つことが出来ます。

主人公オウエンはある種の予知能力を持ち、ストーリーの中で未来を先取りしているにもかかわらず、ジャストな描写がページをめくる手を止めてくれません。

また、主人公たちは宗教、戦争・政治、学校といった力をめぐる大きな問題に対峙していく訳ですが、アーヴィングは明確にリベラルな姿勢を示しており、潔さを感じます。

ＴＶで小説家の小川洋子さんが「大人が泣ける本」として紹介していました。“リトルリーグの試合中にファウルボールが当たってチームメイトの母親を死なせてしまった少年が、それをきっかけに成長していく物語”とのことでした。

実際に読み始めてみると、この紹介から私が持ったイメージとは全く違っていたので、逆に興味を持ち、戸惑いながらも読み進めました。アーヴィングファンなら、そんなことはなかったのでしょうが、私は本書が初めてだったのです。映画『サイモン・バーチ』の原作であることも後で知りました。

翻訳小説独特の読みにくさに、宗教観・アメリカ社会の抱える問題・時代背景などが加わり、上巻の半分ぐらいまでは正直読みづらかったです。それが、やがてどんどんとこの風変わりな世界に引き込まれるようになります。
常に明確な結末を提示しながらも、読む者を驚かせるアーヴィングの筆力は圧巻でした。

奇妙な啓示によってなされる、さりげなく、しかし、確実に反復される主人公オウエンの行動。それが最後の数ページでみごとなひとつの像を結ぶ時、宗教観の違いや文化・風俗の違いを飛び越えて、心がオウエンのために祈りを捧げるのです。

Irving's book has several layers from morality to providence, to humor, to friendship. The parts of the story seem insignificant until you see how they come together. Owen Meany is an engaging character. Although Simon Birch is a good movie, it doesn't do justice to this fabulous novel.
