学生時代に初めて読んで以来、10回以上読み返してます。
気分的につらくなった時に読むと、不思議と元気が出てきます。

ストーリーは、何かしらキズを持っている家族が、父親のホテル経営に翻弄（？）されながら、波瀾に満ちた様々な出来事を経験していく物語です。

ジョン・アーヴィングは、突拍子もない人物設定やアクシデントを小説の中で展開させる小説家ですが、本作品もまさにそのとおりです。

この小説は、一般的には決して「癒し系」に分類されないと思いますが、私にとってはすごく癒される小説で、かつ私の一番好きな小説です。

映画も発表されてますが、原作の世界観とはちょっと違ってるような気がしました。

次々と人が死んで行き、登場人物は全員変人で、傷だらけ。

前半は、何が言いたいのか判らず、とにかくこの暗さに気が滅入ってしまった。
全部読み終えてみると、みぞおちに一発くらった感じ。
一筋縄ではいかないキャラクタばかりのアーヴィングの中でもこれは、筋金入りのキャラクタばかりだ。やりすぎじゃないのか、というギリギリのラインのキャラクタばかりなのだ。そして、読んでいくうちに人物たちにつきまとう悲しみや暗さの中に明るさが見える。
暗いのに、明るいのだ。

不思議な小説。現実というおとぎ話、と呼ぶにふさわしい。
「どんなものも愛よりは安全よ」とフラニーは言う。
悲しみは消えて無くならない、ただいつも漂っている。私たちは傷だらけで、この本を読むのは時につらい。
数々の名言がいつまでも胸を打つ。

ジョンアービングの作品の中ではこれが一番好きです。傷ついた家族の一人一人から見えてくる悲しくも本当に暖かい人間の姿。家族とはかくも不思議な関係だと再認識しました。変でも理解できなくても家族でいる以上支えあうのが運命。そんな抜き差しならなくて、でも喜ばしい人間関係が家族なのです。
私はホテル作りを通じて描かれる奇妙な人間ドラマの渦に深く沈み込み、ある南の島にて全くやすみなく読み続け、二日ほどで読了しました。読み終わった心に残るのは本当にホンワリとした気分と何とも言えない切なさです。勝手にいわせてもらえば。
アメリカ文学の最高傑作。
今となっては一番好きな小説。
もうこんな作品には出遭えないかもと思うほどの運命の一冊。
万歳！ホテルニューハンプシャー。
