　今から13年前、日米間の経済摩擦が問題視されている時代の作品。ストーリー展開のみならず、アメリカから見た日本がとても興味深い。バブル経済崩壊直後の1992年に出版されており、『日本人＝金持ち』という描写がされている。なお、当時のアメリカ国内での日本バッシングの中、著者はわりと中立の立場でこの作品を書いている。時代ギャップは少なからずあるが、この作品により、他国から見た日本の良い点、悪い点が多少は理解できる。
　
　TOEIC750以上にオススメ。

　読んでいる最中に、私自身が知っている人物や建物に酷似する箇所が出てきて妙な既視感にとらわれました。それもそのはず、著者がこの小説を書く上で世話になった人の名を挙げて巻末で謝辞を述べていますが、その中に私が90年にロサンゼルスで一緒に仕事をした人の名前が含まれているのです。

　このことからもわかるように、この小説は著者のCrichtonが綿密な取材を行なった末に練り上げた虚実がないまぜの一級サスペンスです。事実に即した日米関係が生々しく描かれています。あまりに生々しすぎたようで、原作にあった「竹下首相」の名前が日本語版では削除されています。

　映画化にあたっても日米関係に配慮してラストがこの原作小説のとおりにならなかったといういわくつきの作品です。ラストを変えざるをえなかったほど日米関係が当時は緊迫したものだったということが、今となっては懐かしく思い出されま!す。

　なお、英語の難易度はペーパーバック中級者向けといったところでしょうか。

この小説は美女の殺人から日本企業のアメリカ不動産・技術の買収が浮かび上がってくる・・・と言う内容です。この本は1992年に書かれているのでかなり古いですが、このときの日本企業の戦略（対米経済戦略）に焦点を当てられています。当時のアメリカ人が日本人にたいしてどのような感情を抱いているかや日本人の傲慢さも描写されているので日本人としては複雑ですが、アメリカ人の日本の捉え方の一つとして参考になると思います。物語は殺人事件やその捜査、背後関係というように進んでいくので非常に面白いです。当時と今の状況を比較してみるのも面白いかもしれません。
