この小説の一番の魅力は「笑える」ことだと考えている。もちろんゲラゲラ笑うようなものではない。小説全体は悲劇的な出来事が多く起こり、なんだか不安な死の予感が満ちている。登場人物はみな、どこか欠点や問題を抱えている。欲望に振り回され、人生を複雑にする。でも、そうした問題や出来事がグロテスクなまでに過剰なユーモアで包まれている。
例えば、妻が浮気して男の車でフェラチオをしているところに夫の車が突っ込んで、噛み切ってしまったうえ、夫の車に乗っていた子供が大怪我をする、とか。酷いけど、どこか笑える。

こんな節がある。
≪どうして人は、「こっけい」であっても、同時に「真面目」であるということが理解できないのだろう？（中略）そしてガープは、笑いとは同情に関係するものであり、人間にはますます必要なものであると信じていた≫
この部分が本書のしつこいまでのユーモアの根底にあるアービングの考え方ではないかと思う。

生きていればしんどいことはたくさんある。それでも、生きるに値する喜びがある。その時ボクらはきっと、笑っているだろう。どんなに悲劇的なことがあっても、どこかでそれを笑える時、人は人生に絶望せず、悲しみを受け止めた上で、生きることを肯定できているのだと思いたい。

これはこの小説の一面的な見方でしかない。もっと重要なテーマがあるし、色々な読み方が出来る。懐の深い傑作です。

　映画が良かった（特にキャスティング）ので、原作にまで手を伸ばし、アーヴィングに出会いました。長編好きの私には、「ストーリーテラーであれ！」という彼の姿勢がとても魅力的です。特にこの作品は、登場人物たちの後日談で締めくくられているので満足感が一入です。

　特異な母親のせいで、出生からしてスリリングなガープの世界は危険に満ちていて、波乱万丈です。『ホテルニューハンプシャー』もそうですが、アーヴィングの‘若さ（深みより勢い）’が際立つ作品なので、荒唐無稽な出来事の連続を楽しめるかどうか、好き嫌いの分かれるところでしょう。

　ガープの危機感が、初めて読んだ時にはとても滑稽に思えたのですが、その後アメリカについての知識が増えるにつれ、異常ではなく、アーヴィングの作家ならではの繊細な感覚が嗅ぎ取った現実なのでは、と思うようになりました。

同名の映画が好きで何度も見てます。原作も良いとの事で読んでみました。
「ガープの世界」のタイトル通り、彼の人生のフルコースが楽しめました。
登場人物が皆それぞれユニークで一生懸命生きていて共感がもてます。
価値観なんて自分で決めるもので他の人に左右されるべきでないと思えます。

読むたびに何かに気付かされそうな、何度も読み返したい作品です。
