厚さ、重さは相変わらずですが、統計ソフトの発展に伴い、内容的にはかなりアップデートされました。

著者も述べているように、効果量や信頼区間に関する記述を増やし、欠損値の扱い方に関して詳細を述べています。


削られたのはTime-series analysisのセクションですが、ネットで見ることが出来ます。



学生時代に統計の先生に薦められた1冊。社会科学系の研究には欠かせないデータ分析の手ほどきが、分析前のデータの掃除から実際の分析の解釈まで例をふんだんに使って丁寧に書かれている。

どんな統計手法をどんな基準で選ぶのか、それぞれの統計手法の得手･不得手とすること、実際に分析するにあたり、問題となってくることに対する答え、それぞれの手法の計算式、(コンピューターで処理するのが主流となった現在において、きちんと基本的な情報を載せているのは好ましく思う。）を述べた上で、さらに実際に例をあげて、手取り足取り順番にステップを踏んで*最初から最後まで*統計ソフトのOUTPUTを用いて説明してくれるので、とても丁寧。英語論文での結果の表現の仕方も例示。SPSS、SASの機能の比較も各分析ごとに掲載してあり、便利。（SYSTATは4th editionまで）

ペーパーバックも出たが、それでも厚さは3センチとかなり重いので持ち運びに苦労する。non-parametricな手法の記述が少ないことが難点。

以上の難点をもっても、かなり丁寧な一冊なので、おススメです。文献の数も増え、4th版以降の文献も1割以上含まれており、最近の統計のトレンドをきちんと踏まえて改訂しています。私の必要としているレベルよりもかなり高度ですが理解を促す良書です。SASやSPSSユーザーには必需品。邦書でここまでわかりやすいものが存在しないのが残念。
