初めて修道士カドフェルを読んだ頃、ハーブという言葉は日本ではまだなじみのないものでした。物語の中でカドフェルがハーブを使って怪我や病気を治していくのを読んで「ハーブの事を知りたい」と思い、ハーブに関する色々な本を探し、ハーブの苗や種を取寄せたりしていました。その後、ハーブが広く知られるようになりましたが、なかなかカドフェルのように薬としてとらえたハーブに関しての本は少なく、満足のいくものには出会う事ができませんでした。この本はかなり広い範囲のハーブ（フルーツ、ナッツなども含め）の薬効について書かれている１冊といえるのではないでしょうか。写真についても大好きな英国の景色を思い出させてくれる美しいもので、写真を見ているだけでも癒される最高に満足のいく１冊です。

　「ハーブ」という言葉が日本語の仲間入りをしてから久しい。しかし私個人に限って言えば、その語感は、 日本語の「薬草」とはまるで関係のない、取り立てて生活に必要不可欠でもなく、ちまちまごちゃごちゃとした、言わば「女子供のもてあそびもの」といった浮ついた感じのものであった（母の友人がくれたラベンダーティーの香りには実際むねが悪くなった）。この種の「ハーブブーム」への反感は、数年前にはじめて「修道士の頭巾」（社会思想社現代教養文庫）を読むまでつづいた。主人公は、今では私が「心の師」とあおぐブラザーカドフェルである。このレビューを読むことになった人にこのシリーズの説明をするのはほとんど無駄だと思うので省くが、シリーズ21巻すべてになんらかの形でハーブが登場し、重要な役割を果たしている。「この＊＊＊というのはどんな植物なんだろう？」ストーリーを夢中で追いながら、いつも思った。図鑑を調べたりもしたが薬効など今一つ良く分からず、不満が残った。 　というわけで、このタイトルを見つけた時には私の祈りが聞き届けられたと思ったほどであった。ハーブの名前、学名、薬効のほかに、料理への使い方、雑学まで載っている上に、カドフェル各巻からの抜粋がついて「逆引き」もできる。すばらしい。 　欲をいえば、写真がやや「イメージ写真」的に流れて図鑑機能が低めなのが惜しい。でもカドフェルファンなら絶対買い、と言ってしまいましょう。
