青春の一幕だったはずの人が、時を経て再び自分の前に現れる。
知識も経験も積み、互いの状況も環境も変わっての再会は、昔、愛したという思いがあるだけに目をそらすことができず、かといって当時の恋愛感情のような激しい思いはなく、静かで冷ややかである。
当事者だった自分、傍観者となった自分、そしてその後、当事者にも傍観者にもなれず、居心地のよい距離をつかめずに過ぎていく時間。思いは立ち止まっても時間は立ち止まらない。
ナチスドイツのホロコースト（大量虐殺）が背景になってはいますが、私自身はそこにあまり重きを置いては読みませんでした。もちろん物語上はずせないテーマではありますが、それ自体よりも、そこから生まれた一人の人間の哀しい生き方、そしてそれをどう受け止めたらよいか分からず、自らも哀しみを抱えることになる人間の生き方、が焦点になっているように思います。

言葉にも涙にもならないような静かな哀しみで心がいっぱいになります。それでも誰かを愛したくなります。
何度も読みたくなる作品です。

　黄疸にかかり学校帰りに通りで吐いていた自分に、「ほとんど乱暴といってもいい態度で」面倒を見てくれたところから、主人公とハンナの物語は始まる。
　１では二人の愛し合う様子がひたすら描かれている。年の差が２０歳以上あることが、ここでは禁断の愛といった趣を与え、スキャンダラスな色彩を与えている。
　ところが２において物語は急展開を迎える。２０歳以上の年の差は全く別のところで重要な意味をもってくるのだ。法学部の学生となった主人公は思いもよらぬ場所でハンナと再会する。
　その後、主人公が父に相談する件がある。「わたしは大人たちに対しても、他人がよいと思うことを自分自身がよいと思うことより上位に置くべき理由はまったく認めないね」と父は助言する。本書に貫かれたテーマは、何も戦争に向き合うことだけではないと思う。
　３では主人公のとった選択が綴られる。そして、最後にハンナのとった選択も明らかにされる。私にはこれ以外の選択肢を想像するすべはないし、また、主人公やハンナは違う行動をすべきだったというような批評は全く的外れなことだと思う。
　すべてに意味を持たせながら展開していくストーリーは圧巻である。訳者があとがきで、ジョージ・スタイナーが二度読むように勧めていることを紹介している。あまりにも劇的なストーリー展開に、私も小説の細部にわたる仕掛けや感情の機微を置き忘れて読んでしまった一人であると思う。

中学生の時半ば強制的に読ませられた本です。
翻訳物は苦手なのと、前半の激しさにページをめくるのが
おっくうでしたが、読み進めるにつれ消え、
後半は一気に読んでしまいました。全部読んで良かった。
その後、偶然知人が持っていたので再読。また読んで良かった。
そして、文庫になったので購入し、再々読。やっぱり読んで良かった。

読むたびにいつも違う感想を抱きます。
悲しかったり、少しの幸せを見いだしたり、重く受け止めたり...
安っぽいお涙頂戴的な感動ではなく、深く響く感動があります。

この本の影響では全くないんですが、ドイツ語を勉強しました。
英訳の次はオリジナルに挑戦してみよう...かな。
