子供向けの「ホビット」とは打って変わって深刻な調べの「指輪物語」。あの大冒険をしたビルボのその後はいかに？
とても詳細な、かつ読み手の想像力をかきたてる巧妙な文章でMiddle Earthの景色、人々、出来事、歴史をつづります。
あえて、主人公たちの最大の敵、サウロンを具体的には描写していないのが、もっと強烈に読み手に悪の恐ろしさを感じさせます。

トールキンはエルフ語やその他の言語、Middle Earthの歴史、Middle Earthの地理など全て細部にわたって自分で作ってしまいました。この小説はその結果、もしくは副産物として生まれたのです。小説の長さもさながらですが、その後のあとがき、appendixの長いこと！物語に出てくる人物の家系から、言葉の由来から何から何まで載っているのです。本当に、生半可に書いた小説ではありません。

長い旅をする主人公と共に戦い、疲れ果て、希望を持ち、絶望し、完全に一体化してしまいそうなほど強力な物語です。

映画で話題になったこともあり、何度も日本語で読みかけたのだが、翻訳になじめず挫折を繰り返していた。それでは、とおしゃれな装丁にもひかれて原書版で読み始めると、多少文語調の語彙文体こそあれ全体には素直な文章で、案外つらつら、読める。そして今度こそ、ホビット達の長く、重く、試練にみちた使命の旅を最後までつきあうことができて、今深い感慨に浸っている。逃げようのない使命を果たすべく、唯ひたすらにまっすぐまっすぐ目標にむかって進んでいく話ではあるが、その荘厳さに魔法にかけられたように、読む私まで使命感にかりたてられて、共に苦悩し、不安にかられながら、ひたむきに旅をした。ホビットやエルフ、ドワーフ、魔法使い、そして人間と、それぞれの気質や特徴も良く描かれていて、登場人物の行動や成り行きにも説得力があり、浮つくことなくとっぷりと筋に浸れる。最後の最後までまで気高い香りに満ちていて、最後までフロドと旅を貫徹すれば、とても満足した感慨に浸れること間違いなし。ずっしりと、読み応えのあるファンタジー。

このセットについて、またあまりに有名な本作について印象をまとめてみます。
1あの大作が小さ目の印字ながら手頃（といっても500ページ前後あります）なペーパーバックサイズ３冊に収まっています。シンプルながらシャープな印象のカバーデザインも魅力的で、身近に置いて読み返してみたい本だけに何かと便利なコンパクトさです。また、印字の小ささは読むうちに慣れる程度ですから気にはなりません。
2映画はすべて観ましたが、原作で読むとまた新たな印象のドラマを感じました。数多い名場面では、その情景や主人公達の心象が繊細に描き出されており、映画とはまた一味違った魅力を味わえます。
3英語自体はアメリカン英語に比べると若干読みづらい面があるかもしれませんが、立ち止まって読み進むのに難渋するというほどではありません。かえって表現の巧みさも合わせて楽しませてくれる感じでしょうか。
4各巻末に地図が数枚ついていますから、ストーリーに出てくる地名を辿りながら慌てず自分のペースで読み進むのが本作を楽しみ方かもしれません。
