本著は、ロバート・レッド・フォード監督の下、
ブラット・ピットが出演して同名の映画となりました。

映画ではモンタナの自然が全面に登場し
私はこの映画を観て感動し、
モンタナを訪れ、
撮影されたリビングストーンなどを訪ねました。

映画もすばらしいものでありましたが
本著を読む進める中
　モンタナの自然、
　キリスト教の教え

　当時のアメリカ人の考え方、
これらがお互い関係しているということを
感じることができました。

映画があまりにヒットしてしまいましたが
原著を通じて
アメリカ人の将来住みたいあこがれの地である
モンタナとはどういうところか
感じて頂きたいと思います。

映画では、アメリカに住んでいない者にとっては

どうしても美しい自然とフ!ライフィッシングに
目がいってしまいますが
（ロバート・レッド・フォード監督が伝えようと
　していることが全て感じとることは
　どうしても難しい。
　それほど、日本に住んでいる者にとっては
　想像を絶する美しさが映画には登場してしまい
　それ以上のところを感じとることが難しいと思います）

原著を通じて、それ以外のところにも
是非、感じとって下さい。

映画「リバーランズスルーイット」を見て、読んだ原作の日本語訳「マクリーンの川」に私はなじめなかった。判ったのは映画はかなり忠実に原本をたどっており、重要なモノローグも原作からきていることぐらい、訳が全く私には合わなかった。

ようやく長い間版切れに成っていたこの原作を手に入れて読んだのだが、「何と美しい英語！」シカゴ大学の有名な英文学の教授であったマクリーンの処女作はみずみずしい言葉に満ちている。映画でもそのまま使われた冒頭の部分
In out family , there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. We lived at the junction of great trout rivers in western Montana, and our father was a Presbyterian minister and fry fisherman who tried his own fries and taught others.
などは　暗記してしまった。そして最後の、
I am hunted by waters.
には、しびれさせらる。
私には平易だけど正確で美しい英語としか表現できないが、現在この小説を音読で再読している。それだけの価値があるし、おそらく将来再々読もするだろう。小説の内容については、僕はもう既にhunted されているとだけ述べておきます。barry Moserのフライの木版画もすばらしい。

全く蛇足で別の話ですが、映画の最後のクレジットで、「「この映画の撮影では一匹のトラウトも殺さなかった」プロデューサーからクレジットするように指示があった」とありましたが、魚と釣りに対するスタンスの違いが実に面白く、想像力をかきたされますね。

アメリカで長く語り継がれてきた名作。映画化と共に日本での翻訳となりました。読んでみると？？？
原書のニュアンスが硬すぎる翻訳で台無しになっているように思える。
もっとしっとりとした、もっと優しい世界が広がっているはず。
映画は在りし日のアメリカの優しさ・辛さ・暖かさを伝えているのだけれども・・・

魚釣り（フライフィッシング）がアメリカの子供にとってどれだけ大自然と関わる上で重要なのかはよくわかります。
