   アメリカ英語の文法と語法に関する章を新設。英語の文法構造を概説し、わかりやすい文章にするための単語や語句の語順を示し、ありがちなミスを指摘ずる。文献情報についての2つの章を再編・改訂。最初の章では、シカゴ大学出版局がすすめる2大システムを説明し、次の章では両方のシステムに合わせた例を挙げて、具体的な情報源やテーマをみていく。デザインと製作に関する部分を整理して、現在の手順について書き手や編集者が知っておくべきことを反映した。さらに、情報検索がしやすいように、段落には番号を振って、説明的な見出しをつけてある。

   The Chicago Manual of Style は1890年代、シカゴ大学出版局の校正者が学内用の手引きとして基本事項を1枚の紙にタイプしたのが、そもそもの始まりだ。それがやがて小冊子になり、さらに本になった。1906年刊行の第1版である。それから1世紀近く、本書は世界中の家庭やオフィスで使われている。

いわゆる Style Book というものには色々ありますが、私が持っている5冊の中では一番情報量が多く、検索も（馴れれば）割りに簡単です。

Semicolon (;) と Colon (:) の使い分け、Single quotation (') とDouble quotation (") の違い、数学の公式や単位をどう表現するか、あるいは En dash と Em dash は如何に使われるか等々、普段何気なく書いている（読んでいる）英語を、より正確に書きたい（理解したい）という方に、お勧めします。

英語のスタイルは、同じ北米でもアメリカとカナダでは全く違いますし、イギリスにも、オーストラリアにも個々のルールがあります。アメリカの中でも、本書のような Students 向けと、New York Times Manual of Style and Usage のような Journalists 向けでは、当然異なります。

自分の目的に合った Style Book を探すことが一番大切ですが、取り敢えず英語の Usage を確認したいと思った時の最初の一冊として、本書をお薦めします。

評判を聞き、どんなにすばらしいものかと思い買ってみましたが、手にとっても全く読む気が起こらない。
じゃあ参考書として時々使ってみようと思いましたが、自分が欲しい情報に行き着くのにあまりにも時間がかかるか、探し出せない。

Indexも非常に見にくい。
たとえば、semicolonの基本は6.57に説明されていますが、Indexには、説明の大元である6.57に行けという記述はありません。
枝葉の説明がされているセクションがこまごまとわかりにくく列挙されているのみです。
これは致命的ではないでしょうか？
たとえ冒頭のContentsに大項目が列挙されていても、Indexにもその箇所（基本の説明がされている箇所）を記述すべきでしょう。
私のように、最初からIndexを見る読者も多いでしょうから。
洋書はこんなものなのでしょうか？
私はマニュアル作成に従事していますが、和書の索引でこのようなことはありえません。
ちなみに本書では、Contentsではページ番号、Indexではセクション番号が示されています。
この辺もわかりにくいですね。

いざというときに調べるために持っておいても損ではありませんが、他の本ではなく本書でなければいけない理由はないでしょう。
もっとわかりやすい参考書は、日本語・英語にかかわらず、あると思います。
