新聞記者でもあったディケンズは、当時の社会の暗部を描写し世に問うような作品をいくつも書いていて、このOliver Twistも、その一つです。明快な表現で事実を示していくのでオリジナルでも読みやすいですが、この要約版では、話を大幅に要約し簡潔にまとめているので、主人公の少年は次々と事件に巻き込まれストーリーが進展していきます。英語の苦手な読者でも飽きることなく読み続けることができるでしょう。オックスフォード・ブックワームは単に単語を易しいものに置き換えるだけではなく、文法的に解釈の難しい部分は、別の形式に置き換えていますので、同じくらいの語彙数のレベルでも、他のエディッションより易しいと思います。

ストーリーだけを追って楽しむのもいいですが、時代の背景を理解するとまた別の興味深い面を読み取ることができます。例えば、ストーリが大団円を迎えた後に、登場人物たちのその後について短い説明がありますが、当時のイギリスの政策などと照らし合わせてみると、なるほどと思わせる部分があります。

教材として易しく書き直されているせいか、この作品を最近の（せいぜい戦前の）イギリスのお話だと思っている人がたまにいますが、この本の原作が出版されたのは今から約170年前、1838年のことです。日本はまだ江戸時代。アメリカは独立して数十年。当時のイギリスは、産業革命と資本主義の最先進国であると同時に、それらがもたらす歴史的に誰も経験したことのない、どう解決していいかも分からない深刻な社会問題に直面し苦悩していました。当時のイギリスが先に苦しんだからこそ、現代の我々は文化的な生活を享受できているのです。

もしこの本を読んで19世紀の英文学に興味を持たれましたら、日本で書かれたものでもいいので、ディケンズの作品に関する解説書を読んでみてください。

5.0 out of 5 stars Oliverの境遇とその背景と, 2009/2/13
Oliver Twistという主人公が生を受けて、母親が同時に亡くなったところ
から物語がスタートする。孤児となったOliverに待ち受けていたのは、
あまりに理不尽な待遇と悪い仲間たち。そんな過酷な影響を受け、時には
悪影響に毒されそうになりながらも、曲がらず芯を貫き通して生きていく。

紆余曲折を経て、Mr. Brownlowという心やさしい紳士と出会うことで、
Oliverの人生がようやく好転していく。同時に、Oliverの過去とOliverに
執拗に迫る謎の男Monksとの関係も明らかになっていく。
この本が書かれた時代背景を知っていればもっと奥深く読めたのだろうが、
背景を知らない私でも十分楽しめて読むことができた。
Oxford Bookworms SeriesのLevel6で、このシリーズの中では長作といえる作品。

"生まれた時から惨めで不幸な少年、オリバーの波乱万丈の物語。惨めな環境の中で、悪に染まらず、不思議な運命のめぐり合わせにより、幸せになってゆく。読み始めたら、ハラハラ・ドキドキの連続で、途中でなかなか止められない面白さ。さすがにチャールズ・ディケンズの本は面白いです。"
