一流のシャーロキアンの訳なのでまず翻訳上の問題は無い。この段階で躓く本が多いから気をつけないと。さて内容だが、落ち込んでいるときに読まない方がいい、と言っておきたい。とにかく暗い話が続く。そして結末は……。狂気に走ったのは本当は誰なのか、訳者の解説にもあるように高度の心理劇になっている。元気だったら読むべし。さもなくば……。

原題は"The Last Sherlock Holmes Story"。
パロディという言葉から連想されるような滑稽さはありません。ホームズを皮肉ったパロディではなく、正典の文体をなぞったパスティーシュでもない、けれど、「ワトスン博士執筆」のホームズ物です。

読後感は憂鬱です。少なくとも、ホームズとワトスンの友情が根底にある軽妙な掛け合いを期待している向きには推奨しません。

邦題の通り、メインの舞台は「切り裂きジャック」ですが、さらにはモリアーティ教授が絡んで、原題から想像されるように、ライヘンバッハの滝へと繋がります。犯罪界のナポレオンとホームズの関係、ライヘンバッハの滝の前後でホームズの性格が違うのは何故か、ワトスン医師は本当に正典に書かれているとおりの人物なのか、などいろいろ取りそろえているところは、真瀬もと氏のパスティーシュ・シリーズ（女性のシャーロッキアンにはこちらがお薦め）を思い出しました。
ホームズ物なら何でも揃えておきたい人で、切り裂きジャックと内蔵の描写を読んでも平気な人、そして、ホームズ氏を「結婚させるも、殺すも、好きにされてよし」な、パスティーシュが読める人、向き。

多読入門の某書に、オックスフォード「レベル3の壁」とありましたが、確かにレベル2からだと、速度や
理解度が落ちました。

それだけでなく、内容が、自称シャーロッキアンの私としては、ちょっと受け入れがたい部分があったことも
関係あったかもしれません。

よくあるホームズのパロディとしては、出来がよい方だとは思います。
