　これは、一人のアメリカ人が、パキスタンとアフガニスタンで学校を作る、という実話を本にしたものである。彼は今も学校を作り続けている。
　ページをめくって驚いたのは、主人公・モーテンソン氏がパキスタンで学校を作ることを決心した時期と、私が同国の首都・イスラマバードに赴任した時期が同じ頃であったということである。更に、私は同氏が学校建設の場としていた北西辺境州に、当時在職していた建設会社が日本政府無償援助による小学校30校の建設と、女子教員養成校の建設を請け負ったので、その管理と維持に何度も出張していた。
　同じ事業であっても、私の場合は企業の一員としての活動であり、営利を目的としたものであった。そこがモーテンソン氏と私の手段の違うところではあるが、そうではあっても、時には営利と人道支援との間に挟まって葛藤するときがあり、いつかは純粋な支援活動に従事したい、と思うことがあった。
　その思いを見事に表現してくれているのがこのモーテンソン氏の活動である。ほとんど一人で学校建設の計画をし、決定をし、資金を集める、という非効率的で苦労の多い仕事ではあるが、反面、上からの縛りもなく営利を考えずに自分の信じる通りに事業を進めることが出来る。
　パキスタン人を愛し、彼らの文化を尊重し、彼らと同じ生活をして同じ目線で物事を見る、という姿勢なくしては一人でこれだけの事業は成し得なかっただろうと思い、主人公に与えられた能力に敬意を表し、そして私たちのような企業人には真似のできないことであると改めて思った。そういうことが簡潔な文章で小気味よく書かれている。
　ここで思い起こすのは、ペシャワールで活躍する、日本人医師・中村哲さんのことである。このような方々はまことに稀な存在ではあるが、そういう人達がおられるということを我々は認識し、理解し、かげながら応援しなければならないと思う。
　そういうことをも想いださせてくれる本であった。

9・11のテロ以降、世界中ではイスラムという言葉に少なからず抵抗感、嫌悪感をもってきた。しかし、その漠然と存在している思いはこの本を読むと一瞬にして崩れ、驚くと思う。このイラク戦争の原因はなにか？と問われると、イスラムの野蛮さなどが挙げられるかもしれない。しかし、本当の原因は教育が腐敗していたり、全く行われていないことにある。「無知」が問題なのだ。そして、この現状に気づいた登山家の著者が自ら学校を作っていく。地図にも載っていないようなところで一人のアメリカ人が自らの使命を課し、ひたむきに歩んでいく姿は行間から溢れてくる。大人になって「勇気」という言葉を口にすると、どこか気恥ずかしいものだが、その純粋な美しさに触れることが出来ると思う。

この本、、というか正確にはGreg Mortensonのことをアメリカやアメリカの戦争を指示してきた日本を含めた「参戦国」の人間に読んで欲しい。すばらしいアメリカ人と正しいアメリカ、がちゃんとここにいる。政治、経済、文化、宗教、性別、などの人間の概念にあるすべての枠組の及ばない「正義」を実践してきた一人のアメリカ人と彼をサポートする最も保守的なイスラム社会の中の「正義」。その「正義」が融合して何倍もの力を発揮する様は感動的である。Greg Mortenson's achievement makes Al Gore's Novel Peace Prize a joke.
