About the Author

Jack Kerouac's most famous novel, On the Road, was published in 1957 and established him as one of the primary voices of the Beat Generation. In addition to his famous novels, he worked in several poetry traditions including sonnets, odes, and blues.

Regina Weinreich teaches in the Department of Humanities and Sciences at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has published widely in a range of periodicals. She is the author of Kerouac's Spontaneous Poetics: A Study of the Fiction.

It is often said that it is the Japanese language's richness in homonyms that makes it particularly suited to haiku. And with the English language not similarly blessed, a much higher threshold is inevitably set for those not wishing to produce laughably silly, if not desperate, imitations.

Which puts the burden on editing. A task in which Regina Weinreich has failed. With Jack Kerouac having been nothing less than prolific in his production, and Weinreich having resisted advice to be more selective, the result is inevitably a few gems among the rubble, through which one must rummage like a sale cart in a department store. And it would be disingenious to euphemistically describe it as "inclusive--there is something there for everyone".
