単語や文章がちゃんとわかれば面白い。でもわからないと、今ひとつウィットが理解できないというか、文章にのめりこめないというか・・・。単語の１つ１つや文章の１つ１つが大事みたいで、わからない単語は飛ばして読もうとすると、魅力が半減するようです。ストーリーによっては、辞書がないと（おもしろさを感じるのが）難しいものもありました。

ちなみに私の英語力はハリーポッターが辞書を引きながら、なんとか読める程度。大人のウィットを感じるには、（私自身が）英語力不足かな？

　小生は、Harry Potterに挫折した後Encyclopeida Brownシリーズで洋書を初めて読破する経験ができ、その後そのシリーズを第五巻まで読みました。同シリーズでのレビューでも書きましたが、これらは読みやすくてそれなりには面白いけれども、本格的な小説を読む喜びまで期待できるものではありませんでした。

　本書は、読みやすい上に、本格的な小説を読む喜びを味合うことができます。他の人も書いておられますが、ぞくぞくするような感覚がたまりません。ただし、私は好きですが、人によっては「怖い」とか「気持ち悪い」という感想を持つ人もいると思います。私の家内が読んだらそう言うと思います。

　なぜかこれらの短編はミステリーに分類されるようですが、いわゆる推理小説ではありません。ただ、落ちのところでどんでん返しがあるものが多くて、いわゆる純文学の短編のようにストンと終わるわけではないので、そういう意味でミステリーなのかなと思ったりします。質の高いエンターテイメントとして楽しめます。

　これから読む人へのアドバイスとして、英語力に自信のない人は頭から順に読むのではなく、短いものから順に読んだ方がよいということです。The Umbrella Man（9ページ）、Man from the South（15ページ）あたりが短くて面白いです。また、The Butlerは5ページと短いのでとっかかりとして適しています。

　英語の勉強のために洋書を読む人にとって、単語や文法が簡単と言うことも大切ですが、内容が面白いということも非常に重要だなと思いました。内容の面白さが読書を続けるための牽引力になってくれます。その意味で、本書は英語を勉強する人にとってもお勧めです。

　短編の名手ロアルド・ダールの短編作品集。作家の阿刀田高氏も絶賛する"Man from the South"を収録。
　"Man from the South"の他にも"The Landlady"や表題作"The Umbrella Man"など、まさに珠玉の作品の数々。どの作品もアイデアとプロットの組み立て方が絶品です。

　また、ダールの作品は文のテンポとリズムが良く、単語もそれほど難しくないため、英文でも非常に読みやすいです。プロットも凝っているので、物語を楽しみながら英語の読解力もつけたいという人には是非お勧めします。
　読んだ後に漂う微妙な余韻……。一度読んだら、癖になりますよ。
