   チャーリー・バケット少年は、この夢のような招待券を偶然手に入れた。道で1ドル紙幣を拾った彼は、どうしてもがまんできずに、あこがれのワンカのチョコバーを2本買ってしまう。そのお金があれば、貧しい家族に食べ物を買えることはわかっていたのに…。しかし2本目の包みを開けたとき、下の方でかすかに光るものを見つけたのだ！

   その翌日、チャーリーはいよいよ工場の門をくぐる。一緒に行くのは、テレビっ子のマイク・テービー、お金持ちのお嬢様ベルーカ・ソルト、ガムが大好きなバイオレット・ボールガード、それに食いしん坊のオーガスタス・グループ。4人ともどこか頼りない。はたしてチョコレート工場の秘密とは何か、なぞめいた経営者ワンカとは何者なのか、その答えが5人の目の前でしだいに明らかになる。秘密のチョコレート工場はうわさ以上の、驚くべき場所だった。そしてそこでチャーリーを待ちうけていたのは、もう二度ともとの生活には戻れない運命だった。

壊滅的に英語が苦手な私が、英語の勉強にと
一時期英語の児童書にいくつかチャレンジしたのですが、
私がなんとか最後まで読めたのは、たった1冊。
それがこのCharlie and the Chocolate Factory 。

貧しいながらも、暖かい家族に囲まれて育つチャーリー。
その彼に訪れた、特別な幸運。
それは、世界でたった5名が手にすることのできる、
世界一有名な謎のチョコレート工場への、招待チケット・・・。

期待が膨らまずにはいられない魅力的な冒頭に、
次々登場するコミカルで魅力的なキャラクター。
そして、休む間もなく展開していくストーリー。
児童書と侮るなかれ、
自分の英語力のなさかと疑いたくなるような（笑）
劇的な展開に、夢中でページを繰ることになります。
想像力を刺激するイラストがふんだんなのも、
最後までぐいぐい読めた要因のひとつです。

児童書らしく、道徳めいたエピソードや、
家族愛を考えさせるテーマとなっていますが、
そうした堅苦しくつまらなくなりがちなテーマを、
チョコレートのように甘くほろ苦く味付けした、
魅力的なストーリー。
子供はもちろん、大人だって楽しめる、素敵な物語です。

本を読んで、楽しみたい方、明るい気持ちになりたい方、
おすすめです。
中学生レベルの英語で、十分読める内容だと思います。

この本は本当におすすめです。あまり難しくないので英語の学習にもぴったりなんじゃないかと思います。独特のリズム感があるので読むなら是非英語で読んで下さい。
描写が良く、本当に面白いです。読んでるとああおいしそう、と思うほどです。
この作者は日本ではあまり有名ではないかも知れないけどアメリカ等では超有名です。

とにかく是非読んでみて下さい。

大学で２回教科書として読まされましたけれど、面白いだけではなくて実は作者の心からのメッセージが随所に隠されています。現代っ子に対する厳しいけれど重要なアドバイスも読みとれば、さらに面白さも増すはずです。メッセージのヒントはワンカさんのところのウーパールーパーの歌う歌のなかにあります。
