　近年学界だけでなくマスコミでも注目されている、米国名門大Harvard、Princeton、MITの終身教授である物理の美人教授の注目の著作である。
　一般読者向けの平易な物理の解説書と見ると間違える。数式こそ無いものの骨のある内容は高度かつ広範で、恐らく専門家が読んでも退屈しないであろう。著者が1999年に提唱して有名になった2つの4次元世界が歪んだ（Warpした）5次元世界をサンドイッチにしている物理モデルの解説を学ぶ本と見ても間違える。500頁の厚い本の中で、それは最後の100頁にやっと出てきて探偵小説の解決部のようだ。著者は、Newton以来の3百年間、世界の物理学者が何を考え、何が矛盾として残り、それをどう解決しようと試みたかを、著者の広範な科学史の知識と学界最先端の諸説の的確な理解を以って、正確に解説する本を書きたかったに違いないと、読み終わってから得心した。
　重要点が何度も表現を変えて説明してあり、豊富な比喩が挿入されているのは、初心者には親切でもあり、専門家には若干冗長でもあろう。但しスキップしてよい部分はきめ細かく丁寧にそのように指摘してある。また各章冒頭で「不思議な国のアリス」に擬えた童話を導入部としており、初心者に親しみ易くという努力が光る。
　だから、まず英語で読めることは前提だが、最新の物理学の動向のあらましを理解したい初心者から専門家まで広い読者、但し真剣な読者に歓迎される著書である。ただ、例えば素粒子の分類一覧表とか、もう少し図表を充実してくれるともっと初心者に判り易かったと思う。

この本をお読みの前にブライアン・グリーン「エレガントな宇宙」を読んだ方は、早く、4部に読み進みたいと思われたかもしれない。何故ならブレーン、ブレーンワールドの解説が専門家から割りと詳しく述べられた初めての翻訳書と思われるからである。これは、著者の話を理解するには、不可欠である。著者の本書の意図は5部以降である。この分野に詳しい人はそれだけでも著者のこの本の目的がお解りに為るだろう。通常の超弦理論では余剰次元はカラビーヤウ空間にコンパクト化されて、われ等の手段ではそれを実験等で確認は不可能であったが、著者たちは通常の道を採らず、ブレーンの存在をメインに考察する事により、直接超弦理論に挑まずに、いくつかのタイプの歪曲した5次元モデルを提唱し、スイスCERNに建設中の大型ハドロン加速器（LHC)の完成稼動により、余剰次元が存在した場合の素粒子反応などについて詳細に述べている。それを理解させるために、長たらしい3部を初心者向きに述べてある。最後の6部の結びの考察ページ数の制限かどうかは、解からぬが雑である。物理学は論文は数学だらけだが、数学ではない。自然科学である。超弦理論にまで行かなくとも、物理学者は、昔から抽象的多次元空間には慣れている。実際に、実験により、余剰次元の存在を示唆する結果が出たら、ランドール達は更に新しい宇宙観を我々に与えるのだ。その意味するところは非常に大きい。しかし、本の最後の６部結びの考察で述べている様に未解決な問題は多い。この点に関しては、 LEE SMOLINの著作物は未翻訳のものを含めて、この本の理解深めてくれます。著者のモデルは超弦理論のブレーンと標準理論における新粒子の発見可能性などの良い所取りのハイブリッド理論であり、基本的には超弦理論の亜種に属し、あまり整美な理論とは個人的には思いません。良い結果が出ても、前述した LEE SMOLIN等の指摘した難問題が待っています。これは、ランドール達の仕事を興味ある素晴しきモデルであり、それが、確かめられても、統一理論への道は未だ遠いのです。彼女の理論は背景依存です。一般相対性理論は背景独立です。時間も空間もプランク尺度で連続ではない事は20世紀末には、超弦理論でも、ループ量子重力理論でも、それらとは他の道を行くペンローズ達にも理論的に議論されてます。しかし、ランドールの論文は、実際に近い将来に加速器で余剰次元の存在確認できる事を示唆した重要さで、誰もが認めるべきでしょう！しかし、本音を言えば、各章の序文でこの本の程度が知れた、これ以上は・・・。

向山信治　訳　です。

邦訳のほうには、向山信治さんの注釈がついているので、これが
参考になります。ランドール博士の理論が失敗に終わったと言う話を
ご存知の方もいると思いますが、補正理論があるようで、そのへんの
説明があります。
