トム・ソーヤーの友人ハックが逃亡奴隷のジムと筏でミシシッピー川を下っていくお話です。
ユーモアと皮肉に富んだ文章など、様々な魅力がありますが、何よりお伝えしたいのは、この本の主題が「自由」にある、ということです。
黒人奴隷が重要な登場人物の一人なのだから、当然のことと思われるかもしれませんが、彼にとっての「自由」以上に、主人公ハックの「自由」が問われているように思うのです。

物語のクライマックスで、彼はある選択を迫られます。友人である黒人奴隷の逃亡を助けるのか、それとも、法や社会に従って彼の所有者に突き出すのか、という。
ハックはこの問いをめぐり、真剣に悩むのです。
そして、最後に選択をする。
この選択の瞬間にこそ、彼は自らに染み付いている道徳、自らを縛り付けている鎖を断ち切って、初めて「自由」を獲得した、私にはそう思えます。
この時の高揚感といったら！
一度は読む価値のある本だと思います。

なお、方言が用いられているために、読むのにかなり苦労したことを付記しておきます。

奴隷制度は、現代から見れば非人道的。しかし、時代によっては、正当化されてしまいます。さて、『正しい』こととは、何でしょうか？それは、時と場所によって相対的に変化するものです。だから私たちは常に自分たちの行いを省みていかなければならないのだと思いました。トウェインは、規制の価値観に疑問を持ち、それを私たちに問い掛けているような気がします。特にこの作品は､ハックという子供の視点を有効的に用いて、大人の社会の矛盾点を浮き彫りにしている作品です。冒険だけでなく、良心の葛藤と言うテーマが興味深いです。

行儀悪く、口も悪い。そんなハックだが、前作『トム・ソーヤーの冒険』では親友トムと大金持になった。そんなハックの元へ親父が帰ってきた。大酒のみで乱暴者の親父から機転を利かせて逃げ出したハックは、同じく主人から逃げ出してきた黒人奴隷ジムと出会う。そして２人は、広大なミシシッピ川を筏で下る冒険に繰り出す。・・・

前作『トム・ソーヤーの冒険』でトムの相棒として物語を盛り上げたハックルベリー・フィン少年が主人公。あいかわらずのならず者の親父から脱出するハックの小粋な作戦がいい。悪ガキながらも頭の回転の速い少年がミシシッピ横断を夢みるあたりは、さすが少年冒険小説の傑作だ。ハックの親友、我らがトム・ソーヤー少年も再登場するのでお楽しみに！また黒人奴隷の問題もあ!!、同じ少年でありながら差別される側のジムにハックが対等に接するのもいい。したたかだけど人情派、トムと同じく憎めないキャラクター、ハックが繰り広げる冒険に手に汗握って読んでしまう。
