A.A.ミルンによる「くまのプーさん」シリーズ第１作がこのWinnie-the-Poohです。
プーとクリストファー・ロビン、ピグレットなどが活躍する、面白くてかわいらしいお話が１０編入っています。続編は、「The House at the Pooh Corner（プー横町にたった家）」で、これも１０編構成ですが、くまのプーさんのお話は残念ながらこの２冊で全てです。ただ、同じ作者の子供向けの詩集として、「When We Were Very Young」「Now We Are Six」があり、この２作も同じシリーズから発刊されています。（くまのプーさんもちょっと出てきます。）
ペーパーバックなので白黒の荒い印刷ですが、オリジナルの挿し絵は全て入っています。

英語のレベルとしては決して難しい方ではないので、英語初心者向けではありますが、プーやピグレットの造語が出てきたり、プーは単語を間違って覚えていたりするので、教科書のように正確な英語ではありません。しかし、日本語訳では味わえない、プーのたどたどしい言葉やちょっとどぼけた言い回しが原書では味わえるので、英語を読む楽しみを感じられる本だと思います。

ディズニーのパワーもあいまって、ほぼ誰もが知っているであろう『くまのプーさん』の原書です。これこそがオオモトです。
英語は難しくありませんが、８０年前に英国で書かれた本書なので、現代アメリカ英語に慣れた日本人にとっては、
例えば、you don't haveというところをyou haven'tといっているなど、ちょっと馴染みのない表現・語彙もありますが
挿絵もたっぷり入っていることですし、ちょっとがんばれば読み通せます。
繰り返し「VERY LITTLE BRAIN」と書かれ、何と自分でもそう言っているプーさん、実はけっこう賢い小さなピグレット、
ちょっと人づきあいが嫌いそうだけど結局仲良くやっているラビット、いつも悲観的で陰鬱だが憎めないキャラのイーヨー、
森に新たにやってきたカンガルーの母子カンガとルー、森一番の賢者と思われていて難しい単語を好んで使うけれど実はそう賢くないフクロウ、
そして森の生き物たちに絶対的な信頼と愛情を寄せられているクリストファー・ロビン君。
お馴染みのキャラたちが物語を繰り広げます。
プーさんは、issueという単語をクシャミと勘違いしたり、自分の家をノックして応答を待ったり、
自分が黒雲に見えるようにと泥のなかを転げまわってハチを騙そうとしたり、やはりヌケています。
でも彼なりに、筋道たてて一生けんめい考えて行動していたりします。それでこちらも思わず納得してしまいます。
食べ過ぎて穴にハマる話、イーヨーがしっぽを紛失した話、北極探検の話、はちみつとりの話、
大洪水の話、よそ者のカンガとルーがやって来る話、など１０話を収録。文字のレイアウトも物語の一部を担っています。
かみあわない会話、プーさんや他のキャラなりの論理が笑え、かわいいイラストも楽しめます。
因みに、辞書を引いただけではわからない英国文化・習慣の影響、英文にかけてあるさまざまな意味などが
一章ずつ丁寧に解説された『「クマのプーさん」を英語で読み直す』を参照しながら読むとよくわかります。

Shepardのイラストはディズニーのプーさんとは、また違って暖か味がありますよ。ちなみに原作ではプーさんは寒いとき以外はあの赤い服を着ていません。普段ははだかなの。簡単だけど，味わい深い英語だったように思います。
