かつて日本でも翻訳が出ていたようだが、現在は絶版なのでこの原書でしか読む事が出来ない。だが英語で苦労しながら読むに値する名作である。英語も比較的平易なのでそれほど苦労せずに読め、なにより内容にぐいぐい惹き付けられていく。

この本の元になったものが翻訳も出ている『トラトラトラ』で、このプランゲの研究を元に作られたのが同名の映画、というのはあまりに有名な話。映画もそうだがプランゲの本も、どちらに肩入れするでもなく、あくまで客観的に事実を記述していく。それにも関わらず見事なドラマを構成しているのは、やはりこの「真珠湾」という事件に到る過程そのものが、まさに歴史的なドラマだからかもしれない。

この原書を読むと邦訳の『トラトラトラ』にない記述や事実が次々と出てくる。この60周年記念版には、以前の翻訳にはなかった部分も増補されているようなので、改めて新訳を望みたい。もちろんこの続編も合わせて。

『トラトラトラ！』で有名なプランゲの真珠湾攻撃に関する研究を、彼の死後に
弟子たちがまとめた本。
土門周平ら訳『真珠湾は眠っていたか』（講談社）として日本でも出版されたが、
現在は入手が困難。日本語で読みたい人は、古本でどうぞ（全三冊）。
