80年代前半に書かれた、ニューヨークを舞台にしてルースにつながったニューヨーク三部作をすべて所収。真夜中の不思議な間違い電話から生活の位相がずれていってしまう”City of Glass,”ある人物の見張りを依頼された探偵の姿を描いた”Ghosts,”そして失踪した幼なじみの天才の後ろ姿を追う”The Locked Room”の三作品。邦訳は三つの出版社からそれぞれ別に刊行されているようですが、原著は一冊にまとまっています。

オースターには、作家のファンが多いようですが、それもうなずける完成度の高さです。ドン・キホーテや白鯨からの引用など、多少衒学的と言えなくもないですが、とにかく美しい英語で、読者を妖しい世界へといざなってくれます。この三部作で、オースターは繰り返し、見るものと見られるものの関係を突きつめて行きます。自己を形成するためには外から情報を入れなければならない、しかし外からの情報は自分自身ではない、という矛盾を見つめ、自己と周りの境界線の不確かさにチャレンジしていくところが、この作品の醍醐味です。わたしは自我の存在基盤の不安定さについて考えさせられました。それほど長くもなく、読みやすい英語なので、ぜひ原著で読みたい作品です。

~今年の初め、たしか週刊文春で彼について書かれた記事を見て、そしてなにより写真をみていい男だな、というより、面白い小説を書いていそうな男だなと閃いて、まず出世作であるこの本を買いました。

一番小説らしいのは最後の"The Locked~~ Room"だけで、他の2作品は昔のATGの白黒映画を見ているかのようでした。

3作をとおしてのテーマは、「失踪」ということになるのでしょうが、それは後年の"Reviathan"にもつながるテーマであり、この作家の永遠のテーマなのでしょう。

この作家の魅力は、ストーリーテリングの上手さというより（ストーリーテリングの才も素晴らしいのですが）、それぞれが~~「詩」ではないかとさえおもえるような魅惑的な文章（パラグラフ）をひとつのピースとして構成された、楽しくそして本当に奇妙なジグソーパズル状の物語にあるのだ、と私はおもっています。ストーリーというストーリーがない"City of Glass"と"Ghosts"はまさにその典型でしょう。~

　オースターの作品を読んでいると，どこからか現実がほころび始める．気がついた時にはすでに手遅れで，オースターの垣間見せる闇に足をすくわれてしまう．とくにこのニューヨーク三部作の前半二作である　City of Glass と Ghosts では実験的な手法が用いられているため，作品の持つ底知れぬ何かに一度つかまれば，現実から脱線していく自分を見送ることになるだろう． それを快楽ととらえるか，苦痛ととらえるか，そこでこの本の好みは分かれる．映画「スモーク」の原作者だからと読むのではなく，異世界への案内人として身を任すのが正しい気がする．
