まず名前がいいです。ジョン・パトリック・ノーマン・マクヘネシー！！！！

なんて長い名前なんだろう。しかし、これがいいのです。我家の子供はこの長い名前をたいそう気に入って、念仏のように唱えていました。長いけれど、ごろがいいのでしょうか？小さな子でも以外にすんなり覚えるものです。さて、物語はジョンが学校に行こうとすると、様々なハプニングが彼を襲います。その奇想天外さがバーニンガムならではの、ユーモラスな驚きに満ちています。
思わず［エーッツ！！」と子供だけではなく大人までもが笑ってしまいます。
彼に降りかかる様々な出来事をありえないと思いつつも、なんだら妙に説得力もあったりで、「そうかも・・・」って思っちゃうんですよね。

大人が子どもの話を信じないことって、よくあるような気がします。こどもはこどもなりの表現で、自分の感じたことを精一杯伝えるけど、それを真剣に聞かないようなこと・・・ちょっと極端な出来事が続く主人公のこどもの毎日の不思議なできごと。それを否定してしまってばかりいていいのだろうかと考えさせられる面白い絵本です。最後はやっぱり笑ってしまいます。

いつも学校に遅れちゃう子は、遅れても平気なんじゃありません。「ああ、今日も遅れちゃった。なんでぼく遅れちゃうんだろう」って、暗い顔して学校にやってくるんです。そんな子の気持ちがとってもよくわかるお話です。ママやパパや先生にも、「なんで遅刻するの！」「なんで忘れ物するの！」「なんで…！」って怒る前に読んで欲しいな。きっと子どもの時の、どうしようもなく情けなかった気持ちを想い出すはず。一緒にがんばろうねって気持ちにさせてくれるお話です。
