モーリス・センダック（絵）とルース・クラウス（文）コンビによる傑作です。邦題は『穴は掘るもの』。ぜひこのハードカバー版の原書をお求めください。両手の中に、ふっと入るサイズが可愛い。生成りの紙質、その程よい厚さ。絵が墨で、地の文章が茶色。紙と絵と茶色の文章の配合が絶妙です（邦訳された本では、この味わいがないのです）。それに、子供の世界を、「・・・は、・・・するもの」という書き方に統一し、見せていることで、限りなく想像が広がります。見た人の頭の中に、自分なりのその情景と意味が浮かんでくるんです。「犬は人にキスするもの」「手はつなぐもの」「お城は砂で作るもの」「パーティーはハウドゥユドゥーと言って握手するもの」「顔はいろんな顔をつくるもの」。
